Really Terrible Bible Stories vol. I: Genesis Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Every day, worldwide, people hand a book to children that's filled with graphic adult content. It features genocide, incest, murder, rape, animal sacrifice, slavery, and more. And that's just the stuff the heroes get up to in the first few chapters.

How can people get away with foisting this appalling book on young kids? Why do folks believe them when they say it's the best source for morality known to humankind? Because it's the Holy Bible.

In Really Terrible Bible Stories vol. I, Dana Hunter takes off the rosy religion-tinted glasses and reads the Book of Genesis in plain light. From childhood favorites to pulpit perennials, she explores awful details of these stories that are normally glossed over. With cutting humor (and plenty of cursing), she lays the sordid details bare.

This book is not safe for work. It's not suitable for children. It may even get you banned from polite society. But every single really terrible story within comes straight from the Holy Bible.

A reading of the bible filled with the disgust, anger and vitriol such a contemptible text deserves. Without the rose colored glasses and extremely loose slack given the holy book by Christians, it's revealed to be a pretty bleak and thoroughly evil story. Really Terrible Bible Stories is the bible without any of that, and frankly presented with, yes, some strong language. I think what delicious cursing there was is all in the right place, and not in excessive amounts.

I'm a big fan of Dana's blogging and now I'm a big fan of her longer format writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should be Used in Bible Studies

This would be a good book for a bible study class. It's a fairly bald recounting of Genesis (with some editorializing) but I came away thinking "what's the other side of the story?" It would be interesting to hear someone give a "traditional" take on, say, the Flood, then compare and contrast that with what is presented here.

Overall, very thought provoking. Very good (and fast!) read.

In Dana's own quirky way, that readers of her blog will recognize, she provides a different way of looking at bible stories. Stripped down, without the apologetics, she lays bare the truth and ugliness in them.
