Review

I believe it to be an essential purchase for anyone serious about developing their understanding of the game. --Chris Bray, What Color Is The Wind?

About the Author

Jeremy Paul Bagai has published backgammon articles in Anchors: The New England Backgammon Review, Chicago Point, Flint Area Backgammon News, and Inside Backgammon. His annotated match with Kit Woolsey was one of the very first instructional works on backgammon to be available on the Internet. This is his first book. He is the owner and editor of The Fortuitous Press, publisher of Backgammon Boot Camp by Walter Trice, and Backgammon Praxis by Marty Storer. Jeremy received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in the psychology of human decision-making from the University of Pennsylvania. He lectured at the Wharton School for a time in order to pay off his gambling debts, and when that proved insufficient to the task, he briefly traded options for Wolfram and Hart. He feels fortunate to be living in the San Francisco Bay Area, and wishes he played backgammon better than he does.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my top 3 all-time favorte Backgammon Books.

I've been playing Backgammon for about 25 years (off and on). I consider myself anywhere from a solid intermediate to an advanced intermediate player.

I found this book to be wonderful simply because of the way Jeremy explains things. He has an approach to teaching and illustrating the examples that he calls "The Inflated Comparison Method." The basic idea behind it is that not only does he show you the theory behind the example, but gives you variations of the same example with slight modifications to each position whereby the decision would have been different. As you may know, Backgammon is a game that varies dramatically depending on even a slight change of a single checker. This approach of his helped me to see and understand those changes.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to solidify his or her game and start crossing the threshold to the upper levels of mastery.

I wasn't sure what to think about this book when I saw it for sale here. I've read a lot of backgammon books over the years, and started out with Bill Robertie back in the late 90's early 00's. Of course back then the player/authors only had their experience and exhaustive roll-outs to determine the "best play" in certain positions. Now with the computer programs (this was written before XG became the dominant one) it is much easier to determine the "correct" play. I enjoyed the authors writing style which was clear and amusing at times. Plenty of good modern pointers to pick up here as some old problems are reexamined and corrected. By the end of the book you wish you could buy Barclay Cooke a sympathy beer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoying Begai's CLASSIC BACKGAMMON

Outstanding book that takes some backgammon problems and paradoxes from the masters and shows intermediate players why the experts are the experts. The prologue has a small section on the computer programs that were used to "roll out" the positions, I especially enjoyed the Magriel problems, Jeremy shows great respect for the master. I liked Magriel's book because it presented an integrated theory for developing a whole game. Begai's book has a "best of" quality, it presents individual pieces of a mosaic, maybe in another attempt he will lay out an opening roll to last checker off book of his own. Highly recommend this for any level player.
