Choose Your Parents Wisely (Brighton's No.1 Private Detective Book 2) Kindle Edition
Private detective Joe Grabarz is scratching a living working small cases for clients who don’t pay well, but when a reward is put out for a missing girl, he sees an opportunity to turn his fortunes around.
The only problem is that everyone in Brighton wants a piece of the action.
And yet, still no one can find her.
It reminds Joe of his first case, another missing girl. Back then no one seemed to care. Could the answers to the present mystery lie in his past?
In a race against time to find the girl, Joe will have to face up to his mistakes, untangle a web of local corruption, and confront a sinister conspiracy.
Maybe this time things will end differently.

This story starts with the disappearance of a local girl, and the town has gone crazy trying to find her. The case brings back bad memories of a case when another girl went missing but then, the town nor the press were interested.
Joe, following his own methods, starts to investigate the missing Joy. The story flows well as both cases are described. A great read, highly recommended.

CYPW is two parallel stories in one. It features cynical British P.I. Joe Grabarz who takes it upon himself to find a missing girl. At the same time we get a kind of origin story where a young Joe takes on his first case, which is a similar case to his modern day mission. At first it wasn't always clear which story I was in, but I definitely got the hang of it as the story progressed.
The things that I enjoyed most about this book, were the writing, the style and the wit. The influence of Chandler is clear and this is no bad thing. Joe isn't what you'd call a nice guy, but I did kind of like him. Some of Trott's smart lines and observations are first class stuff. I liked both Joe characters and I loved the older policeman in the young Joe sections. I liked the tension between Joe and his secretary - I wanted more of that.
I did have some problems with the book. I felt that the two Joes in the two mysteries didn't quite marry together. Now I haven't read book 1 of the Grabarz series and perhaps I had this wouldn't give me a problem, but taking this as a standalone (which I know it isn't - so sorry this could be unfair) I found it hard to work out how young the Joe could have become the older Joe. I also felt that some of the big set piece scenes felt a little awkward and needed closer links to the development of the plot. At times the Brighton setting became intrusive.
Overall I did enjoy the mystery. Especially the jokes and the cool writing style. Trott does a good job here of writing a novel that works as a standalone but which also sews and nurtures the overarching plot development of his series. Well done Joe Grabarz.
