Fashion model Kaitlyn Sasse is tired of the fast paced life of the runway. Home for her has always been Diamond Falls NY where she inherited her beloved grand' home. Dropping in on her friend shoe designer & store owner, Ava, there's more than reminiscing happening. Ava's store, Sensational Soles, in the Diamond Falls Mall, is not doing well. Her competition, Glamshoe Maven seems set to put Ava out of business. All is not what it seems however. As Kaitlynn & Ava take the escalator up to the food court Ava sees a woman with bags of shopping that makes her upset. Though she blows it off to her friend, Kaitlynn finds out that the woman, Penny, was fired for stealing designs & shoes from Ava. Penny also had been fired from Glamshoe Maven because of her sticky fingers shortly before 48 year old Marge Maven dies unexpectedly of a heart attack. Now her brother Drew is running the store. Returning from lunch, Ava & Kaitlynn, find that Penny has fallen from the escalator into a ground floor fountain. Kaitlynn is determined to help her friend keep her store. More than one surprise pops up including suspicion of Ava doing away with Penny. Someone suggests Kaitlynn hire Auston 'Ace' East P.I. He tries to tell her he's got two open cases and no time. She shows him how he can refer out the cases for a fee & still take on her friend's case. Bent on proving she's not an empty headed blonde who needs male protection, she and Ace find out whose lying, why & how Merge & Penny had to die along with several twists & turns I didn't see coming. Black Friday at the Mall has never been this interesting.
This is a nice quick read for a couple of hours. Having read Ms Wright's first series, 'The Fairie Apothecary Mysteries', this is a 180 degree turn from a wondrous series involving magic, Elves and many other creatures of myth and legend. In both worlds there's a woman heroine discovering herself.
So if you like fashion & detecting, this Sasse Sleuth stories for you to indulge in as several more books are ready or almost
