This novella, while short in length, showcases Landeros' meticulous world-building skills and his ability to create engaging characters in a well-imagined fantasy setting.

    From the lush rainforest-covered mountains of Jingseh to the closed islands of Sebel, the narrative unfolds with promise and potential, only to be marred by the all-too-human vices of mistrust and malice. Landeros introduces readers to a world rich in details, complete with a carefully constructed caste system, magic rules, and a vibrant culture that evokes flavors of ancient Greece and Rome. The way he seamlessly incorporates religion, magic, and social structure into the narrative enhances the authenticity of the world he has built.

    While the novella primarily delves into the Jengsehi society, the glimpse into the closed-off world of the Sebels adds intrigue and mystery to the narrative. However, a desire for more insight into the Sebel culture and motivations leaves readers hungry for further exploration in future installments.

    My only complain for this story is the info dump may seem a little excessive for quite a number of readers. Nevertheless, certain individuals, myself included, may discover it to be captivating. However, the author does possess the capacity to navigate certain intermediate paths in order to appease both categories of readers.

    In conclusion, "The Vision Prelude" is a promising start to the "Law of Sacrilege" series, showcasing Joshua Landeros' skillful world-building and character development. While some editing concerns may detract from the experience for some readers, the unique setting and fresh approach to fantasy make this novella a worthy addition to the genre. As Landeros unfolds the tapestry of cultures and intrigue, readers are left with a hunger to uncover the layers of this world in future installments.

    Throughout the course of human history, whenever two groups of different people have met and come together for the first time, there is always the inevitable clash of cultures. It is human nature after all to fight and challenge that which is different from the world and viewpoint we know and accept in our hearts and minds. The very fabric of every powerful civilization that has ever ruled on Earth has been fraught with conquest, bloodshed, and untold brutality. From the age of Ancient Greece and the Persian Empire to the Ancient Egyptians and even the Roman Empire, these great and vastly important cultures all came on the heels of conquest over other cultures and people, with murder and slavery being only two of the horrific outcomes of these battles of will.

    In this book, the author perfectly captures this idea through the lens of fantasy and horror. In this fabled world, readers see the coming together of two cultures through the eyes of a loyal soldier, who has always yearned for adventure and set out on the high seas for the people of Jengseh when he comes across a new continent of Sebel. While the story explores this concept of culture clash through a fantasy and magical lens, it is hard not to see the theme and even historical context in our own world. Even in the United States, the entire foundation of a nation is built upon the conquest of the indigenous people of this continent, and we can see that play out between the people of Jengseh and Sebel.

    The action and adventure help elevate the powerful themes of this book, as do the rich character development and world-building that make this book shine so brightly. The fast-paced and incredible mythos of this book also do a remarkable job of helping the reader become invested in this fantasy world, and the thoughtful and moving character development of Pinus as a protagonist helps the reader get invested in this incredible new fantasy series.     Exploration and potential conquest. A vision, a path, a story to follow and consume. With the cover of The Vision Prelude by Joshua Landeros displaying a seemingly gruff man as he sits upon a throne of skulls, readers will get a tiny preview into what lies within the pages. The Jingsehi have travelled to the closed islands of the people of Sebel. There is a clash of cultures, expectations and at the very foundation: a clash of people. What starts with promise and potential is nearly always ruined by the same common factor: humans. It is easy to see that while the book is a novella, and therefore short by nature, substantial effort was put into the planning of these characters, their world and their motivations.
    Landeros has collected his previously published episodes into a singular volume ripe with extras such as maps, demographic information such as the passage of time and seasons, an index on the continents and the people who live on them, as well a plethora of previews for additional works that are related to this story. Landeros is whetting the appetite of readers with this installment. This book is his way to capture your attention and draw you deeper into his world. With flavours of ancient Greece, Rome, and European influences Landeros has built a world and invites readers into it.
    Our protagonist Pinus is the very picture of a soldier. He is a young-ish man at twenty-seven with the thirst for battle and the head for strategy. Landeros sprinkles his work with religion, magic and an entire social structure without cramming it down the readers throats. These elements are introduced naturally and excessive explanation is not required. While this book focuses on the Jingsehi and their culture, there are more books that will take place in this world so those longing for more information on the Sebels need only be patient as they may be explained in later installations.
    If you are looking for an engaging and easy read, then you should absolutely add a copy of The Vision Prelude by Joshua Landeros to your library. A novella and easy to read, this book launches an entire universe that fantasy readers will want to explore. Carefully crafted and absolutely the beginning of a series, the previews of the connected works are sure to draw you into this world of Landeros’ making.

    In "The Vision Prelude: Law of Sacrilege," author Joshua Landeros introduces the readers to Pinus Ave Longavian, heir of the Mountain Blade, a knight and war leader within his right. His father Pinus Pondero Longavian, king and head of the Longavian House, shared a common enemy with the Jingsehi people, the Ankari. Pinus was also descendants of Sechia Alii, who possessed magical abilities and lived longer than average. There was a battle to safeguard and protect the Jingsehi people from the ultimate destruction of the Ankari. So much bloodshed and sacrifices were made for the greater survival of Pinus' people. Unfortunately, being out at sea for a long period of time, the rodents posed more of a threat than anything else. Rations of food were dwindled due to the rat droppings in their seeds, causing the sailors to eat minimally. Scurvy was the true cause of such loss on board, so much so, Pinus had to do his best to look out for his members. He was willing to sacrifice himself to negotiate a parley with the Asum of Allusea for food and supplies. Of course, the Asum didn't see Pinus as a threat per se, but their Ancient Sebelian laws were in place due to past foreigners invading and causing destruction. The Sebels were extremely cautious since then, which no one could blame them.

    Reading details about battles amongst the Jingsehi people, as they demonstrated a level of bravery many would hope to possess, is a great experience. Everyone was involved and many risked their lives in understanding their god Vah has a beautiful resting place waiting on the other side for them. At a few instances, Pinus kicked things into high gear as the leader and sole protector of all his soldiers. Whenever doom was upon them, he would cast a protection spell to shield as many of his men and women of battle from the enemy's launched arrows. Overall, the Jingsehi people won the respects of the Sebelian people from Pinus being true at heart and in his nature to protect and honor others no matter what.

    This book was entertaining and enjoyable to read, the author did an exceptional job at providing details to keep his reader's interest. I would recommend this book for people who want to be witness to an action packed, with a hint of gore, battle between a common enemy against average men and women serving their purpose to maintain their lands on White Mountain.

    To say this prequel had me placed right in the fantasy world right away would be an understatement. It was both extremely fun, slightly confusing but more than anything else It was chaotic. There were highs and lows going into this as it did make enough sense for a standalone, at least for me finishing. But had its moments of longer information and rather strange way of describe the world, story and plotline with the back and forth timeline.

    That said it was a standalone that had potential elements of magic which made this stand out in both positive and negative way. Landeros doesn't hold back from the personal side that comes with a worldbuilding gruesome violence, adventure, of course the magic and creatures. It was dark but overall not my favorite with how the storyline played out which may be in part because I haven't read the original series.
