Summer Solstice (The Stricken Squad Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

Victoria, BC, 1964.

Inspector Allen Church is summoned to the hospital in the middle of the night to investigate a rare cruelty: a young woman turned by a wolf. Early inquiry suggests targeted malice, however no motive is forthcoming. Church’s attention is quickly divided when a member of his squad stumbles upon evidence of a decades-old history of criminal investigations connected to lycanthropes and others like them being suppressed. Aware that his choice lies between risking his own career and a collapse of public trust, Church must find a way to navigate office politics and the urgings of his own personally affected detective. But the danger of the full moon hasn’t passed, and there is more violence yet to come.

Politics meets paranormal investigations as the Stricken Squad untangles cases fraught with discrimination, resentment, and hope for a better life. As their investigations progress, these tensions threaten to spill over into the community, the station, and the squad itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great blend of two genres

Summer Solstice (The Stricken Squad Book 2) by Minerva Grey is a great blend of police procedures and paranormal fiction. The novel focuses on a police squad that is tasked with handling crimes of the paranormal nature. In this case, a woman has been turned by a werewolf and there is no clear reason for why. As people begin to call for blood, it will be up to the squad to solve the crime before the situation gets out of hand. What I really liked about this read was that it showcases the supernatural elements while making it feel as though this could have actually happened. It is a testament to the author's skill with both style and word use. Anyone who enjoys either of these two genres will enjoy this read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting and Revenant...oops, I mean Relevant

Thoroughly enjoyed the second book in this series. I was completely drawn back into 1960's Victoria and its characters, who continued to evolve as they faced new challenges. I expected a solid mystery, some character development, and a touch of the occult - all of which I got in abundance! - and I was surprised in the best way at how relevant the cultural setting felt. I absolutely would recommend this not only to lovers of historical fiction and mysteries, but also those interested in the human (and non-human) condition.

The next book can't come fast enough!

4.0 out of 5 stars Criminal and paranormal world.

As soon as I started reading "Summer Solstice”, I embarked on a trip into a criminal and paranormal world. The narrative, which takes place in 1964 in Victoria, follows Inspector Allen Church as he investigates the mysterious case of a young lady who has been transformed into a wolf. Despite the fact that this theme may sound predictable or even repetitive, the author manages to give it a different approach, making this story more than addictive.
The narrative’s pacing may vary with moments of intense action with more realistic sequences. I like this writing technique; the story grabbed me immediately because it masterfully intertwines elements such as mystery, intrigue, politics and strange events that create an immersive reading experience.

Grey’s second novel in this series did not disappoint. This was such a flip on traditional werewolf novels – I loved the take on it here, gritty and realistic. The mysteries overall were tightly knit and compelling, with some genuinely creepy scenes. Great building on the characters who we met in the first novel, and excellent incorporations of some modern concerns around the police but with a historical lens. Had a blast with this second novel, and can’t wait for the third!
