About the author

Andrew Butters is a married father of two living in New Brunswick, Canada and he will tell you that his first published work was Losing Vern as part of the Orange Karen: A Tribute to a Warrior anthology. In reality, it was a 500-word anecdote about the time he lit himself on fire. That story made it into the third installment of the Darwin Awards books.
Fire is not the only foe for Andrew. He has received several severe concussions and a few “minor” ones, the last coming in the summer of 2011. It goes without saying that he is one hundred percent on board with head protection and brain health.
Not all his distinctions are as dubious as appearing in a Darwin Awards book. There was the time he participated in a trick on stage with Penn & Teller. He had a solid minute of screen time on the Super Dave Osborne Show. He scored a game-winning goal at Maple Leaf Gardens and even did an art swap with filmmaker Kevin Smith. He was also given a whole three seconds of non-speaking airtime in a TV commercial, and who could forget when he appeared as a fighting homeless man in a rap video.
He writes, creates, eats snacks, blogs, toils over his next novel, creates videos, and is a huge fan of golf, science, EQUALITY, and the Oxford comma. Andrew sometimes lets his love of attention override common sense. You can find evidence of this pretty much anywhere you find him.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of deep love and loss
Verified PurchaseTender and bittersweet, this story will find a relatable place within us all. Grief comes in so many forms, and in Losing Vern, the character of Vern is shown to the reader through the memories, words, laughter, and tears of those he left behind. As mourners, the days immediately following the loss of a loved one are usually confusing, maddening, and surreal. We can be surprised by those who step up, those who are unable to grieve, and those whose serenity of the moment signals an ability to cope--for now.
Let us take from this story the universal need for compassion, patience, and empathy.
Losing Vern is not a story soon or easily forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars prequel I hope🤔
Verified PurchaseWhat a great read, in some ways Vern and I are very similar and my son (Wally) wore only orange up until High School, so I was totally locked in and was sad when it ended. As a sequel is probably unlikely, I would be all over a prequel for sure, tremendous job Andrew, now I must get back to near death by a thousand cuts, another book that I’m enjoying tremendously, apparently Andrew and my upbringing were both injury prone, fortunately I didn’t need as much assistance as he.🤪

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read
Verified PurchaseThis story took a brief moment in time that resonated deeply with me, having lost both my mother and my sister within months of each other.
The writing is clean and flows well , Vern is precious. The interaction between the characters is so plausible and brings them to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time well spent.
Verified PurchaseThis is a short story about the unexpected death of a loved one. There are so many things that get in the way and the survivors have to keep going. There was much more than just sadness and grief involved;there is compassion and humor as well. Much of this story felt real. I wonder if there really was a Vern.
