"I've read tons of ADHD books-or, more accurately, I've started tons of them-but Jesse's is legit the first one I've actually finished (and I did it in one sitting). Extra Focus is an entertaining and incredibly easy read, with no unnecessary repetition for the sake of extra pages. Just concise information and practical tips, sprinkled with tons of relatable 'ohhhh, it's not just me!' moments. I really wish this guide existed when I first got diagnosed. If you're dealing with ADHD-or even just trying to understand it better-I highly recommend you check out Extra Focus. Trust me (and thank Jesse later)."

- Reviewed in Australia on 21 February 2025Verified PurchaseI enjoyed reading the book about ADHD and found that it was full of loads of practical things that I can do to help me as someone who lives with ADHD and the superpowers that I have as a result.
It’s a nice short book which is full of a tonne of value.
- Reviewed in Australia on 14 June 2024Verified PurchaseFilled with insights, well written, easy to read. A book to keep and revisit. Amazon asked me to write more, but that’s it.
- Reviewed in Australia on 20 June 2024Verified PurchasePhysically, I found the book really pleasant to hold, turn the pages of, and take notes in. The advice is also very helpful, but it is a bit repetitive (apart from the summaries at the end of each chapter, which is actually useful).
- Reviewed in Australia on 24 September 2023In "Extra Focus," author Jesse Anderson provides an intimate look at what it means to be an adult diagnosed with ADHD. He offers insights into how to embrace its strengths and navigate its challenges. With a succinct yet enlightening introduction, Anderson briefly reviews the official list of ADHD-associated traits but also debunks common myths about ADHD. For instance, he argues that ADHD is not merely a deficit of attention; rather, for many, it manifests as an overwhelming focus on multiple things simultaneously.
Anderson delves into the concept of "time blindness," describing a "clockless mind" that perceives time as either "now" or "some distant point in the future." He accurately captures the "interest-based nervous system" that makes tasks either incredibly engaging or painfully dull for those with ADHD.
The book is replete with practical advice, such as establishing routines, setting time-based goals, and transforming idle moments into productive "thinking modes." Anderson suggests using visual aids for memory and designating a "launch pad" for essentials like keys and wallets to ensure a smooth departure from home.
He introduces the "Four Cs Rule" to make tasks more engaging and manageable: Captivate, Create, Compete, and Complete. Anderson also addresses a frequently overlooked aspect of ADHD—elevated anxiety and diminished self-confidence. He recommends techniques like recalling past achievements and journaling to alleviate these concerns.
In summary, "Extra Focus" is a quintessential guide for those with ADHD. Jesse Anderson leverages his firsthand experience to create a book that is concise, easy to understand, and brimming with actionable tips.
- Reviewed in Australia on 29 June 2024Verified PurchaseThe same strategies you've tried 1000 times before. I was so disappointed to find nothing new here, just the same stuff you can find for free on every "how to ADHD" website. None of it helped me even a little bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Resource for Understanding and Managing Adult ADHD
Verified Purchase"Extra Focus: The Quick Start Guide to Adult ADHD" by Jesse Anderson is an extraordinary resource that has significantly impacted my understanding and management of ADHD in adulthood. From the first page, Jesse Anderson's expertise and compassion shine through, offering a sense of hope and understanding that is often missing in adult ADHD discussions.
What sets this book apart is its practicality and accessibility. Anderson does an excellent job of breaking down complex topics into manageable and relatable content. His approach is straightforward, free from jargon, which makes it an easy read for anyone, regardless of their familiarity with ADHD.
The book is filled with actionable advice, grounded in the latest research and personal experience. Anderson's strategies for managing daily life with ADHD are not just theoretical; they are tried and tested, offering real value to the reader. The tips on time management, organization, and dealing with distractions have been particularly helpful in my own life, providing me with tools to overcome common ADHD challenges.
Another aspect of this book that I deeply appreciate is its focus on the positive traits of ADHD. 5.0 out of 5 stars Extra Focus - the first book anyone should read to know about ADHD in 2023
Verified PurchaseADHD is an evolving concept that has changed scientists' understanding for many years. For a new reader, weeding out older ideas and figuring out the latest information about this subject becomes a daunting task when there are so many books and materials available written over many years.
Jesse's book Extra Focus brings forward the latest understanding and crisp points about ADHD in a concise way.
I will recommend anyone who wants to know more about ADHD in 2023 to read the book Extra Focus first to get an initial idea about the recent trends in the understanding and myths related to the name of the condition.
Understanding that others are going through the same confusion and guilt about this condition provides a huge relief. Jesse's story helps the reader connect with the book and relate many ideas from their experiences.
I liked the highlights that explain why many current self-help books and methods that work for neurotypical people may not work for neurodivergent brains and the suggestions he offers to overcome those limitations.
There are action plans and strategies worth reading, many of which can help the reader improve their management of the condition. The strategies section is valuable and leads to absolute happiness while reading. Strategy summaries provide help to reinforce the concepts.
With the initial start obtained from this book, the reader can venture into the world of ADHD to learn more from the scientific books and research with proper direction. This book is a valuable addition to the journey of understanding ADHD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you feel heard and understood
Verified PurchaseI came across this book after watching Jesse's video on youtube: Avoiding Toxic Productivity Advice for ADHD.
it really makes me feel heard and helps me resolve some knots in my head in a manner i can understand and accept. it's like a safe space to be myself and know that having adhd is not a crime, as it is view as where i'm from.. they wouldn't understand i didnt choose to have adhd. it's all " you are lazy", "you just dont want it". being under all these unhelpful blasts for years, this book just makes me feel heard. it's a good feeling. to feel heard and heard well, from a distance.
one other bonus is that the book cover... the texture is great. it scratches this itch in my head i never knew existed.
