5.0 out of 5 stars A Story Through Poems That Are Accessible

This is not your typical poetry collection—I say this because I’m often obtuse when it comes to poetry.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. This collection of poems brilliantly weaves together the innocence and naïveté of the aspiring artist with the allure of Hollywood to show the complex realities involved in the pursuit of one’s dreams.

These poems left me wanting to ask the author/poet some deeply personal questions about their line between fiction and creative nonfiction. I found myself taking notes or highlighting sections because the imagery (baptism outside the living room window, bloodied steak abandoned with a side of hopes and dreams) were profoundly evocative and made me wonder (long after I finished) about the inherent costs of success. Do we miss our opportunities because we don’t say yes at some unknown pivotal juncture in our lives or do we knowingly decline offers at pivotal junctures in our lives because what is required is more than we are willing to (should be asked to) pay? Can we afford it? Mentally? Physically?

I recommend this for fun and for discussions at book clubs.
