Shallow: A Heart-Pounding Love Story of Passion and Risk (A Going Under Novel Book 2) Kindle Edition
Shallow is a thrilling contemporary romance from New York Times bestselling author Georgia Cates.
Nick Hawke—
Fast cars and one-night stands—those are the things that keep my heart racing and my life uncomplicated. Relationships aren’t in the cards for me, especially after watching my father fall apart when my mother left. But everything changes when I meet Payton Archer, the first girl I want for more than just one night.
Payton Archer—
I’m searching for love—something real and lasting. My plans for a summer of fun take an unexpected turn when I meet Nick Hawke. He’s nothing like the guy I imagined for myself, but there’s something about him that makes my heart race. He’s exciting, dangerous, and everything I shouldn’t want. But the way he looks at me... it’s impossible to resist.
Can I take the leap into the unknown and trust that love is worth the risk? Or will the safe, shallow end of love be all I ever know?

- Reviewed in Canada on December 10, 2012This is a straight forward classic romance, between the feisty heroine Payton Archer, and tattooed bad boy Nick Hawke. When Payton drives into the back of Nicks car on the way to watch a street race. She has no idea this gorgeous guy is one of the drivers in the race. Nick is friends with Jessie Boone the hero from the first book. Jessie warns Nick to stay away from Payton, she's not the usual type of girl he hooks up with. But that's easier said than done.
This is a pleasant enough read if a bit cliched. Both Nick and Payton are eighteen. He is from a poorer family, unlike Payton whose parents are rich, and will definitely disapprove of Nick. This is quite explicit sex wise. Which surprised me, as the first book Going Under was not. The characterisation is very good I really felt that I got to know Nick and Payton, and the side characters. The story was fairly straight forward, with one of Nick's ex-girlfriends trying to cause trouble. I might have given this a higher rating but it lacked that extra spark for me. And I am getting a little tired of the bad boy who has been through loads of women always landing the virgin! I certainly wasn't convinced that eighteen year olds would discuss marriage and having babies quite so much. Plus the story had too many similarities to the first book. But overall this was okay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it
Verified PurchasePayton is awesome and seemed kind of shallow in book one but I think as you get to know her in this book you see it's just a protection thing to keep her from getting hurt. She seems rude and abrupt but has great one liner downs and it's really tragic the connection she builds with Nick and nearly gets threatened and destroyed by things that are not even in her control. It takes a a serious move by nicks sister to bring them together again. He is the ultimate bad boy that gets his first taste of love.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Truly, Madly, Deeply..."
Verified PurchaseOh, this is so goood! I loved Payton in "Going Under" so I was so happy when I found out that she had her own story :). I also like that we get more of Claire and Jessie.
Payton has a mouth on her and has no filter, which is why I love her.
"Why be difficult, when with only a little bit of effort, you can be impossible?"
So Payton, Claire, and Jessie crossed over to Jessie's old territory to watch a drag race. While driving to the race, Payton gets into a fender bender with Nick Hawke (who is one of the racers). Now Nick is a playboy...he can't even count how many girls he has been with....but he is intrigued with Payton. She is different!
"Yeah, I've always been different. I tried being normal once. It was the worst five minutes of my life."
She is witty and calls him on his bull and says NO to him. She tells him she is not looking for a one night stand, she wants "truly, madly, deeply". It drives him crazy....he has to be with her. In his pursuit...he falls in love. She is the only one who has ever had his heart!!
When we're not together, I want to be. When we're not touching, I hold out hope for just the slightest accidental graze. You're all I think about and it's because my whole world is falling for you. Hard."
Swoon!
But of course there has to be a wrench to mess it all up!! He has to pay for the choices he made in his past....and Payton doesn't think she is strong enough to deal. She is completely hurt...shattered.
I love when Claire told Nick,
"I liked you a lot better when you were messing up her lip gloss instead of her mascara."
Can they find their way back to each other??? I loved the sound track that is listed for the book.
Such a good YA! Can Dallas and Dane have their own book...pretty please!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Bad Boy Romance!
Verified PurchaseShallow had everything I look for in a Mature YA/New Adult Romance; I loved the characters, was enveloped by the story line and it had just the right amount of hot romance. I felt this book the whole way through; I got to see the changes in two young adults, their hesitant relationship and how they dealt with other life stressors. I found myself smiling at times because of the sweetness between the two and near tears as the book took sad, angsty turns that made my heart drop.
To be honest, I didn't think I was going to like Payton because she seemed a little snobby in Going Under and this book was titled Shallow so I was expecting her to be nothing but shallow. I was so wrong! She is beautiful and can have anything money can buy but she also cares deeply for her friends, follows her morals even when it costs her a boyfriend, and has a great sense of humor. I expected her to turn Nick down because he was not from her neighborhood but that was not a problem for her at all; it was his player reputation that was holding her back.
Nick is a player with a capital P. He doesn't do relationships and he can't give a number when asked how many girls he has been with. He was burned by the one woman who should love him unconditionally and it is extremely hard for him to trust anyone, especially females. I found Nick to be extremely sweet and considerate to those he cared about and when Payton popped up on his radar, he showed her that side of him and how can a girl resist a sweet, sexy, bad boy?
Their first meeting is pretty entertaining due to Payton's wit and Nick's cocky nature but I enjoyed seeing this side of them and then what they would eventually become. The have two distinctly different backgrounds but sometimes people can seem different and have things that bind them and make them more similar than they ever imagined. I absolutely fell in love with Payton and Nick!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves bad boys, great banter and the New Adult Genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good follow up
Verified PurchaseThis was a great follow up story about Payton, Claire's best friend. She wants what Claire has - Jessie, a perfect boyfriend . They got to a street race and meet Jessie's friend Nick. They are sparks but he's a 'playah' as she calls him so she tries to avoid him.
Their relationship goes through similar prejudices that Claire and Jessie's did.
It's a well-written book and I enjoyed it. I gave it four stars rather than five because it was too similar to the first book and I felt the ending was a little abrupt.
For older teenagers and above.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Mouth of the South"
Verified PurchaseI LOVED Going Under, so there wasn't even a hesitation in downloading Shallow when I saw it on the new Indie list. I practically begged Georgia Cates in my last review to write a story about Peyton, my favorite character with her sarcastic wit. She has got to be the most entertaining character ever with her "Mouth of the South" (grin) and "Back Off" (read badass) personality. I love, love, love her self confidence and desire to find real love. I also love alternating point of view stories as you FINALLY get to hear what the boy is really thinking and whether he really is a big jerk, in love or just clueless. Plus you get to be in the mind of one HAWT guy falling into TRUE love.
Peyton accidentally meets Hawke when she bumps his car with hers on her way to watch her friend race his new Porsche. She is traveling with Claire and Jessie, listening to Jessie warn her to stay away from his old friend and man-whore Hawke. It is attraction at first sight, but Peyton is too smart to get involved with a renowned man-whore and does not want to be another meaningless number to him. She agrees to be friends with him, but is soon falling for his charming ways. Unfortunately, neither of their parents wants them together and forbid the relationship.
I love that Jessie and Claire are in this story a lot and that we get to see how their life together is turning out. Hawke is not the baddest boy I have ever read about, but is up there with Jude from CRASH, Cage from While It Lasts and Trick from The Wild Ones in Hawtness and drool-worthiness.
There was A LOT more (descriptive) sex in this one than in Going Under and is for a Much More Mature reader.
