This is what it's all been leading up to - the final volume in this epic nine book superhero series.
It's impossible to say anything about the plot without including spoilers, so I won't even try. The biggest and baddest of the superhumans returns from exile - and still thinks he should rule the world. He's completely invulnerable, and the only people who stand a chance of stopping him are the remaining New Heroes - only they lost their powers at the end of the last book. Oh no.
Here we get the answers to several mysteries that have run throughout the series, and the final third of the book sees all the pieces coming together in a really satisfying and original climax. In the lead-up to this, the author does that George R.R. Martin thing of having major events happen off-stage while we see how those events impact smaller groups of characters - allowing us to spend more time with people we've grown to know during the series.
There are a couple of unpleasant sequences - think facial injuries and broken teeth - but for the most part this is tween-friendly and morally sound.
At the end of it all, you're left with just one major question: What will Michael Carroll's *next* series be about? I can't wait to find out...
