Weird Theology: Small Worlds Book 1 (English Edition) Versión Kindle

4,5 de 5 estrellas 203 valoraciones

The end of the world is inevitable. How it happens is up in the air.

Ryan Smith never expected anything interesting to happen to him. He figured he was just another boring guy who would do the daily grind for the rest of his life. He had no idea the man in the suit that constantly followed him meant he was one of the candidates to find the last nanoverse. But Ryan found it - in a gift store’s box of keychains and marbles.

Now, he has the powers of a god - and zero idea how to use them. Unfortunately, other gods know about him. Enki is coming, wanting to use Ryan’s awesome power to stop the apocalypse - unaware that doing so would doom the world. Now, Ryan finds himself caught in the middle of divine power struggles as gods start taking sides.

Can Ryan survive long enough to manage a kinder, gentler Armageddon?

5,0 de 5 estrellas Holy hell this story packs a punch!

Holy hell this story packs a punch! I knew going into it that the story was science fiction, but I didn’t realize it was also heavily influenced by mythology, another guilty pleasure of mine.

Told from multiple perspectives, the story takes the reader through an epic battle of good versus evil, god versus god, all over control of modern day Earth. There’s space travel, nanoverses, mystical beings, monsters, gods, demons and good ol’ humans.

The story begins with Ryan Smith, a 30-something nobody that everyone thinks is crazy. For Ryan’s entire life, he’s been followed around by a man in a suit that only he can see. When Ryan stumbles upon a small black marble, the man in the suit finally begins to speak and throws Ryan’s life into a tale-spin.

After discovering the marble is actually a nanoverse, the last nanoverse, Ryan learns he’s now the god of this nanoverse, making him almost omnipotent. Ryan meets up with Crystal, who tells him he’s the last god, the one with the power to end the world. Now, Ryan must work with Crystal and a few other key characters to try to save the billions of lives on Earth before he must bring about the apocalypse.

    Story Flow:

The story starts off mildly, with Ryan trying for the millionth time to get the man in the suit to talk back to him. After a few pages, we meet the badie of the story, Enki, a god hell-bent on taking the nanoverses of other gods so he can “save” the world.

The story picks up the pace from there and takes the reader through countless universes. We meet other gods, some whom fight with Ryan and some who fight against him. There are multiple small battles that lead to the final showdown, and just when you think the action is about to give you a little reprieve, you’re wrong, because here we go again with another round of high-energy action.

    Character Development:

Ryan is a great character. Being the newest god, he knows nothing of his powers or the way things actually are. Ryan is relatable in his naivete and reacts pretty close to the way anyone would act finding out the things he does.

There are a host of other characters the reader is introduced to, most notably Crystal (the oldest god with a fake British accent) and Athena (yes, that Athena). The author did a hell of a job giving these two women quirks, personality, faults and strengths. I loved both Crystal and Athena because they are two truly badass heroines that know how to hold their own intellectually and in battle. Their flaws are understandable and relatable, and I was over the moon to see this author didn’t make his “gods” wear costumes.

We also meet some terrifying gods in the form of the badie, Enki, and his fellow gods Moloch and Bast. These characters were also very well rounded and fun to interact with.

There were a few scenes of switching POVs, but the author handled it well. Had the switching not been there, I think the reader would have lost some of the connection they felt to the characters.

    Plot Holes:

None specific to this book. There are holes that need to be addressed, but there’s a strong promise they will be in the next book. I know the author’s well on his way to completing the second book in this series and I seriously can’t wait to snatch it up.

    Overall:

This book was very well written. Though not what I would necessarily call “hard-sci-fi”, the characters do use their true sight to manipulate elements, bringing some really great physics and science into the story. There were some scenes that were a little hard for me to follow, purely because of the science introduced, but the author explained things in one way or another I never felt truly lost.

Fight scenes were written well. You had a good sense of what was happening at all times. Movements stayed true to what physical abilities were capable of, and even though the characters were gods, they weren’t completely omnipotent and could sustain injury.

Though there were a few minor typos, with a story of this length and depth I’d honestly be surprised to not find any. They were easy to overlook and didn’t stop my mental movie from continuing to play.

If you’re interested in sci-fi, mythology, science, super heroes or just pure action-packed fun, you won’t want to miss out on this book/series.

This book was a great read from start to finish. Today many books cover similar topics which can sometimes become boring but the idea behind this book is so innovative. It is written incredibly well, has interesting characters and is makes you want to read more and more.
I am very excited for the second part and hope it will be available soon.

    Great read!

5,0 de 5 estrellas One of the best books I've read in a long time

I'm going to start this off by saying I usually don't review things, but I decided that this book deserved a review on my part.

I am an avid reader in my spare time but I am also very busy so I am usually very picky about how I spend my time. I found however that when reading this book I couldn't put it down, the story would suck me in and not let go and I had to make myself put it down so I could go and be productive.

Now the book is not without its faults, as any book is subject too, especially independently published books, it does have the occasional spelling or grammar error, however a majority of them are minor and there are very few.

I originally read the book when Alex published the first draft on his blog, now for anyone who did the same and is wondering why they should also read this, I can tell you from first hand experience that it is very worth it. Almost every part has some new addition to it, adding to the story and better explaining the thought process of all the characters.

Overall I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has the slightest interest in fantasy books based in mythology (Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian, etc.).

It started out of a single sentence prompt and grew in the best piece of fiction I've come across in a long time. Small World bring you a well-thought out plot, interesting and always developing characters, all set in a fantastically original universe. The setting is simple: a regular, somewhat neurotic guy stumbles across a marble that slowly turns him into a god. Soon the reader follows him into a thrilling, humorous whirlwind of gods, monsters, new and old worlds. Every page brings a new adventure, all while keeping the fantastic story coherent and easy to read. As a book I've read several times, it comes very highly recommended!
