Past Dwellers: Change your mindset to change your life Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

The past is not a permanent state of being, but a stepping stone to the future. Instead of dwelling on the mistakes and regrets of the past, learn from them and open your mind and self to a new tomorrow, one that will be brighter, more enriched than before.

With the authorโ€™s own experience of pulling himself out of the clutches of the past, he explains a few very important but relatively simple life lessons to learn to let go of your past and maximise your present to build your future. These include:

Making wise choices.
Being conscious of the value of time.
Knowing the people you spend time with.
Using your senses to observe and absorb your environment.
Understanding your abilities and being able to tap them carefully.
Most of all, building a strong foundation and never stopping learning, evolving and growing.

Donโ€™t stay in one place, move on and build your own future by being present in the moment!

A very small and good self help book!

A very small and good self help book!
Plot summary:As the name suggests, this book is about how not to be a โ€œPast Dwellerโ€ and spiral into the incidences that happened in your past. Instead, this book talks about how to live in the present and how to battle real life demons like procrastination, wasting time, living a life with no routine, superiority complex, over-thinking, over-sharing etc.Author Samridh Seth has articulated all his life lessons in a very comprehensive way. The book is divided into 16 small chapters that talk about topics like โ€“ not living in the past, improving oneself, sorting time for personal growth, customizing oneโ€™s routine, procrastination, changing with the world, growing productivity, differentiating between reel life and real life, moving ahead no matter what and staying calm, importance of money, adapting to change etc.Review:Personally, I am someone who does not pick up non-fiction/motivational books that often (Yes, I love living in my own fantasy world ;)) but to be honest the main motivation to pick this book up was the fact that the book is not a very long book or a tough one.Other than the fact that the author has kept this book very short and sweet and has said what he had to say very precisely, I loved the fact that I could relate to the book. For instance, there is a chapter in the book where Samridh talks about how everybody tries to follow the routines of a successful person, without realising that you need a customised routine for yourself to grow. I have similar beliefs where I do get inspired by a lot of people (famous or not) I tweak the habits according to my life and follow them.Other than that, Samridh has used very apt analogies to describe each and every theory that he understood very early on in his life. For instance, he has used Shark as an example in one chapter where he talks about how we need to keep going no matter what, like the shark does.Samridh Seth has indeed written in a very compendious way which is tough, given the topic is of self help. I would not say that this is one of the best books in the said genre, but it does the deed emphatically. If you are someone like me, who is not a fan of motivational/self help books, do think of picking this book up as it is not as tough to read and is very short and interesting at the same time.I give this book 3.8 stars out of 5. The only thing that bothered me a little was that the diagram given was on say page 1 and the explanation to that was on page 3 or 4 maybe. Other than that, this book has my heart. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have read two thrillers โ€“ psychological and romantic back to back after which I needed a non-fiction book to open my perspective again. It happens when you read too much of fiction you start behaving like those characters sometimes hence itโ€™s necessary to get back to reality as soon as possible. And what a nice light motivating and self-help book I landed upon- the book is named โ€œPast Dwellersโ€ written by a first-time author, Samridh Seth, who has just touched 20 years of age. A tagline also goes along with the title of the book that says โ€œChange your mindset to change your lifeโ€. The cover page is very attractive with neurons working in a human brain over a white cover page with the title of the book shining in the black font.

This 110-pages book is a short self-help book which you can complete within 1 to 1.5 hours. It is divided into short chapters of around 3-4 pages along with diagrammatical representations which makes it interesting for the readers as we get a chance to get into the authorโ€™s mind completely. Samridh has used his own past experiences in order to share with us how he was wrong at that point of time and what he learnt from it. He also shares several real-life examples and also quotes wordings of some popular personalities in order to prove his points. You will acknowledge everything the author says. There are many mature statements in the book which really moved me even when the author is just 20 years old and me having experience of reading so many books in this genre.

Author talks on various topics such as humility, importance of time management, trying various activities to be prepared to get into any of them in bad times, money management, stock marketing, dreams, goals, body management โ€“ working-out, meditation โ€“ working on the mind, friendships etc. I liked the approach of the author the way he has used references and metaphors to make his concepts interesting and distinct such as Palm trees, pyramid etc. One can talk on any topic that Seth has included in the book for 100 pages but he stays focused on the topic by only mentioning worthy sentences and ensuring that he covers the most within 3-4 pages itself.

Samridh has written this book in a very easy language which can be read and understood by a school-going kid as well as an adult. Another USP is that every age-group shall be able to learn something out of the book irrespective of the authorโ€™s age. I also liked the flow of the chapters where author didnโ€™t spend much time in talking about himself or his experiences but immediately moved on to the topic. You can easily finish this book within a sitting itself. There are many quotes that you would want to keep with you which can definitely motivate you.

Now, talking about the drawbacks- the first one is the pricing of the book which is around 345 INR. I doubt if many readers can afford a 100-page book for such a big amount. Secondly, I felt that author cut-short many topics where there could have been more elaboration or explanation. For e.g. Author talks about managing mind but how it needs to be done is not helped with. There are many such instances.

Overall, this is a fine and positive read. I give this book 3.75* out of 5. Such an experienced writing from the author at this young age was really a surprise for me.

    Thanks.

Every day we wake up and plan to do the work that can potentially give us a better future and in between all this, we daydream of a higher version of ourselves and imagine all sorts of success in life. Then we turn the mental wheel a bit backward and think about past events where someone or something hurt us or led us to uncomfortable situations and we dwell in that. Nostalgia is a luxury. It lets us think that we have enough time to sit and try to micromanage the events of the past. While we live in the past we miss out on the opportunity to become someone who we really want to. I like to read self-help books only when the author has experienced the book on his own. Why you may ask. Itโ€™s simply because unless one experiences it, you really canโ€™t share the wisdom with another person.

โ€œPast dwellersโ€ is a very short book, and the writing style is very crisp. Neither the author wrote pages after pages sharing his experiences nor did he keep on giving rational evidence to prove his point. Both of those things are there but in a manner that is just enough to convey the message. As I kept on reading the book, I found that he lays down a path for us to follow and get inspired, and make our own path. He talked about why certain things do and donโ€™t work. Also, he inspired the need for certain tiny behavioral changes to make in order to live a better life.

In a particular section, he explained the need of developing multiple skill-sets and diversifying our knowledge base because thatโ€™s what time demands. In a way, he talks about the need of evolving oneโ€™s own mindset with changing times. One of the things I really enjoyed was giving ample amounts of examples and illustrations while explaining the concepts. The market is already overflowing with hefty motivational books that work less on wisdom and more on filling the pages with the exact same thing.
This book stands out for the concise wisdom that it delivers.
