One Liverpool family's struggle to survive the Second World War, as the city was flattened by German bombers, and the men were far away at sea fighting to save England. Sisters Eileen, Lucy and Nell and their brothers Tom and Jack found love and built families at the close of the 1930s. The nation lived in dread that war would break out in Europe again. After the King's speech Britain transformed itself to a wartime footing. Tom Whitney served in the Merchant Navy, and young Jack stole his brother's identity to also go enlist. As they trained, the war remained far off from Tom's wife Gladys and her new baby. A massive evacuation sent thousands of children off to Wales. Lucy and her sisters decided to keep their kids home in Liverpool with them. Germany's Blitz rained bombs down on the city in an effort to destroy the port. Neighborhoods near the waterfront were flattened. Lucy's house was bombed, and so was Gladys' with her and her three children stuck beneath the rubble. No matter, they moved to another house farther inland. The times were desperate with little food, diphtheria outbreaks, and scores of helpless children died. Plus, every night the Gerries sent more than a hundred bombers to destroy what remained of Liverpool. The war raged for six years across multiple oceans for the Whitney brothers, and Tom captured many battle photos with his little Brownie camera. After the war ended, dire poverty remained the greatest obstacle to survival. The Scouser kids schemed to make it through and better themselves, and the families survived to tell the tale.

5,0 su 5 stelle Memories of times gone by.

Anyone who loves Liverpool nostalgia will be delighted with the memories this book brings.
As a writer of times gone by myself I couldn't wait to get hold of a copy and I was instantly transported to another world.
Life in Liverpool during WW2 is seen here with all its hardships and sorrow.
Despite the fear and tragedies people endured daily you will find that the scouse humour and stoic spirit kept the strong community thriving in the worst of times.
I believe with a passion that these memories deserve a voice and are a legacy we owe to future generations. Doreen has made a wonderful contribution of passing these memories on so others may remember how much people sacrificed for the freedom we enjoy today.
Get a copy now and enjoy a stroll down Liverpools memory lane.

I bought this book as a gift for someone and one for myself. I am so glad I did. This book is so captivating. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. The author puts you back in time. I never could have imagined how these families persevered through such a horrible war and the strength and courage it took for them to survive. I felt as if I was living the struggles and sacrifices these families lived. This book is truly a must read. I would give it 10 stars if I could. Don't miss out on a true piece of history. Order this book today !!

5,0 su 5 stelle A must read for scousers with heritage!

Great book so far. I bought this because my Nan and Grandpops lived in Liverpool 8. I ended up buying the kindle edition as well for my mum. It’s a trip down memory lane, before the NHS, during the war, when times where hard and you made do and mended. A time when community spirit and family was perhaps at its strongest. Only negative is the is not the usual amount of words on each page, so the book ends a bit quicker than I thought...however with the author donating most of the proceeds to the Sally Army It got to get 5 stars!

Bought scousers for my mum for Christmas. Once she opened it up she couldn’t put it down and read it within 2 days. She is from the same area as the author and could relate to everything in the book. Said it took her back to being a child and she remembered all of the places and streets mentioned in the book. A great trip down memory lane for those of a certain age and a good look back at the times of hardship and struggle that our parents/nans & grandads lived through for those who are younger.
