The Reformed Faith: An Exposition Of The Westminster Confession Of Faith (English Edition) Formato Kindle

4,8 su 5 stelle 31 voti

The Reformed Faith by Robert Shaw (1795-1863) is considered by many to be the best classic commentary on the Westminster Confession.

In preparing the following Exposition of the Confession of Faith, framed by the Westminster Assembly of Divines, it has been the object of the author to state the truths embraced in each section, to explain the terms; employed wherever it seemed necessary, and to illustrate and confirm the doctrines. To avoid swelling the volume to an undue size, the arguments have been stated with the utmost possible brevity; in the illustrations, conciseness, combined with perspicuity, has been studied, and numerous passages of Scripture, which elucidate the subjects treated of, have been merely referred to, without being quoted at large. It is hoped that the attentive reader will here find the substance of larger works compressed within a small space; that materials for reflection will be suggested; and that an examination of the texts of Scripture marked, will throw much light upon the points to which they refer.

The Westminster Confession of Faith contains a simple exhibition of the truth, based upon the Word of God; but its several propositions are laid in opposition to the heresies and errors which had been disseminated in various ages. It has, therefore, been a prominent object of the author of the Exposition to point out the numerous errors against which the statements in the Confession are directed. The reader will thus find the deliverance of the Westminster of Divines upon the various errors by which the truth has been corrupted in former times, and will be guarded against modern errors, which are generally only a revival of those that had previously disturbed the Church, and that had been long ago refuted.

5,0 su 5 stelle A Clear, Concise, Biblical, and Edifying Commentary on the WCF
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 27 settembre 2012
    Formato: Copertina rigidaAcquisto verificato
I agree with the previous three reviewers: this book, "An Exposition of the Westminster Confession of Faith," is outstanding. The print is readable, the binding is solid, and the layout is nice. What is more, the content is brief, clear, and biblical. You won't find lengthy ramblings in this book. What you'll find is a to-the-point theological discussion of the WCF that is full of Scripture references and allusions.

It may sound funny to have a commentary on a confession, but this commentary actually brings you back into Scripture to learn the biblical foundation of this great confession. In other words, Shaw concisely explains each paragraph/chapter of the WCF and also brings up more Scripture that teaches doctrine under discussion. In a helpful way he also describes some of the controversies and errors to which the WCF occasionally responds.

Along with a chapter on each section of the WCF, you'll find an introduction, an appendix concerning the WCF's approval, and a topical index. I do wish there was a Scripture index in the back of the book (the Scripture citations are listed in the written sections of the WCF). Perhaps if the publisher reprints the book, a Scripture index will be provided - it would make an outstanding book even better. Regardless, if you're looking for a brief, readable, biblical, and edifying commentary on the WCF, I highly recommend this book.

5,0 su 5 stelle A rather good exposition!

Initially I thought why would anyone write, much less need, a commentary on the Westminster Confession of Faith since it was pretty much self-explanatory. Now I can see how such a commentary complements the WCF. For those that may need further explanation on one or more points then you will most likely find this book useful.

One thing you should keep in mind though, keep a dictionary handy as there are a number of words that will require its use.

This takes the crown for the best WCF commentary. The others that are popular, currently, are filled with post WWI modernism. I wish that more people would go to Shaw for a WCF commentary.

5,0 su 5 stelle A Good Exposition Of The Unity Of The Scriptures And God's Covenants With Man Through The Ages
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 24 novembre 2015
If you want to understand the teachings of the Bible in a few hundred pages, this book is for you. Although the Confession itself is written in unfamiliar vocabulary and sometimes strange syntax (1640s), Shaw's expositions of each chapter and section are easy to follow. The editors have done a good job of putting Shaw's work in modern English without doing any violence to his meanings. Shaw is a good source; he was a solid Associate Presbytery (Seceder) Scotsman writing in the early 1800s.

This is a book all Christians should read! It's my first time to read a book on the Westminster Confession of Faith, and it is well worth the price and time to study it. If all members of Christ's Church read the Westminster Confessions, Catechisms and This exposition on it we'd all be stronger in our faith and understanding of God and what He requires of us as believers.
