Science, Marxism and the Big Bang is a contribution to a debate on Marxism and science.
The ancient Greek philosopher Anaximander once wrote that the heavens and the worlds within them began in a “sphere of fire” arising from some unbounded chaos.
Some 2400 years later, Karl Marx's life-long companion, Friedrich Engels, echoed Anaximander’s dialectic: “everything that comes into being must pass away”.
Science, Marxism and the Big Bang discusses the evolution of ideas about our place in the universe, by touching on some of the great philosophers and scientific discoveries of cosmology, including those of Aristotle, Galileo, Newton, Kant, Hegel, Engels and Einstein.
This discussion dispels the misconceptions presented in the book by Ted Grant and Alan Woods, Reason in Revolt, which claims to expound the fundamentals of Marxism.
In particular, it disputes the argument that the revolutionary discovery of the Big Bang theory can be disproved by Marxist thought, or that the theory is just another “creation myth”.
Engels praised Immanuel Kant's theory of the “origin of all existing celestial bodies”. Peter Mason argues that Engels’ embrace of Kant’s origin story, which is now an accepted part of the theory of the development of planetary systems, is compatible with modern theories of the origins of our universe.
