The author has spent his life studying the Japanese martial art of Aikido. When looking for teachers, he asks questions about the meaning of sacrifice, the physical and mental limits that can be exceeded.
This is a book about passion and the cost of following your dreams. With beautiful illustrations by Kim Soung (USA) - former Disney illustrator and an intriguing cover by Kuba Krawczyk (Poland), the book brings a new quality to the message of universal importance of the relationship between teacher and student. While it describes the martial arts world, this book does ask fundamental questions for which there are no simple answers, and the value is just asking these questions.

Dear Friends,
We are pleased to announce the release of the printed edition of the Kingdom of Dust, by Piotr Masztalerz Sensei.
This book is our manifesto. It explains where our approach to training comes from and why we are looking for students, not clients. We sell it to pay the rent, to provide free training for people in need and to grow as a community. By purchasing it, you become part of its history and help survive our dojo - the Kingdom of Dust.

"The Kingdom of Dust was published in Polish in 2018. It is a book about being an uchideshi- a full time student – about building a dojo, and about the nature of teacher-student relationships. Aikido Journal highly recommends this book and hopes you’ll enjoy this short excerpt from the work."
Aikido Journal

"Aside from Masztalerz’s fine writing and beautiful character sketches, anyone within the martial arts community who has committed to a teacher, all of whom who have feet of clay, will find this book of merit, because Chiba Kazuo and Piotr Masztalerz’s relationship is an extreme of something many, if not most, of us have gone through. And it is through the harsh light of the extreme that we can illuminate the subtler shadows of our own path."
Ellis Amdur, A Critical Engagement With Piotr Masztalerz’s THE KINGDOM OF DUST

After buying the book, I thought I would read it within 2 up to 3 days. And it turned out to be completely different. I struggled to fit in a week. There were days that after one chapter I had enough. That was because my own memories came out and it wasn't easy. It's not really just a book. The author very honestly describes his years spent in the dojos. So much so that this book is more of a confession, and sometimes a mirror that everyone who has spent more time training in martial arts looks into. And it doesn't matter what martial art it is... from the perspective of spending most of your life in the training room, they are all really the same. And everyone practicing on their way will meet their Chiba Sensei. A teacher whom we admire, at the same time terribly afraid of him. Who knows perfectly well how to hit the "mints" so that the soda water does not hit our heads. In each system there will be exercises, during which, as a rule, one dies with each performance revives again. Here , it is zazen, in Yiquan the basic exercise, that is, standing in the Chengbao position, in the Long Fist training of the Mabu position. Reading this book is a return to the years of training without restrictions, when everyone was young and beautiful and had time and had no children 😉 . As it is aptly shown here, not everything that was done at that time is suitable for telling beginners – chapter Dachshund 😉 . I myself have been a martial arts teacher at the Physical Education and Sport School of the Wrocław University of Technology for almost 19 years. When Peter describes his memories from the time when he taught there himself (and incidentally we met in the corridor of the School, because I had classes immediately after him), these fragments of the book are particularly close to me, because I knew the people mentioned there perfectly and I have very similar thoughts as the Author.
When a beginner goes to martial arts classes, he is sure that he will practice until the end of the world and even longer. The monotony of training and the sacrifices associated with it painfully verify the hurrah of the optimism of beginners. I would suggest anyone who is starting to read this book. He will see what martial arts training looks like after several decades of training, as if "from the kitchen". He will see that in the end only he and the training place remain. The rest of the people practicing there disappear. And we are left alone with the room again. This feeling of loneliness is perfectly described by Peter. That's why I started my review by comparing this book to a mirror.
The book, despite its "heavy" character, is written extremely lightly and is a pleasure to read. I recommend it to anyone practicing martial arts and seriously approaching training – this is a must-have.

First a disclosure. I know Piotr and most of the individuals mentioned in his book. I am also an aikido teacher in the same organization as Piotr. This book is a wonderfully written account of his development as a martial artist and human being. His style of writing is easy to read and conveys so well the array of emotions which he experienced. The book is laid out in small parts, each telling a story. The sum of these parts is his story. Such a heartfelt book. If you are a searcher of any leaning, this is a book you must read.

While this book is ostensibly about the martial art of aikido, it is actually about so much more. The author tells of his life in the aikido world and, more centrally, with his highly-respected (if somewhat difficult) teacher. All of this is fodder for an examination of what life is about. The author's honesty and eloquence in telling the story make for compelling reading. If you are a martial artist of any stripe, this book is a must read. Even if you are not a martial artist, it is still a great book.

    5,0 z 5 gwiazdek Excellent, well-written book

I have trained in Aikido for 45 years...although, admittedly, not as intensely as the author. This is the first book review I have ever written. I originally read this book as a downloaded version and just received my paperbound version this week. I will likely read it again. The author is a skilled writer and gives you that "fly on the wall" perspective on his development as an Aikido student and teacher, and as an uchi deshi in the intense dojo of the late Kazuo Chiba Sensei. It touches upon the wide range of emotions involved in learning the art of Aikido and especially those intense emotions involved in being an uchi deshi (live-in student) to a teacher who spent his life making sure that the Aikido he was teaching did not compromise in any fashion. The writing had a hold on me as strong as any action novel that has kept me up all night reading. It inspires the reader to re-examine his/her own relationship with Aikido training. I was sorry to get to the end of its 465 pages. I highly recommend this book.
