- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 April 2015It's 451 AD, and Jute prince Hengest narrowly survives a Saxon raid on his father's fort in South East Britannia. Vowing to avenge the raid and rescue his abducted sister, he leads a warband to Gaul and so begins a series of adventures within the tottering Western Roman Empire. The author weaves his (mostly) fictional characters seamlessly into an authentic historical backdrop, and his writing shines in the description of the many fights and battles, which benefits from his period knowledge and HEMA expertise. Aimed at a YA readership, there is no sex and the story is light on the horrors of war, but combat is properly realistic - blood spurts and limbs are severed. The date and setting suggests that the hero might play a part in the epic battle of the Catalaunian Plains, and in an afterword the author hints at such to follow in a sequel.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 May 2015Fast paced and fun but also with a really gritty edge, Mr Page builds a classic and engaging narrative around some excellent fight scenes, demonstrating a good eye for the period and an understanding of warfare in the period. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 April 2015People die, people whom you think they can't kill off yet. Then there's blood, the fights actually make sense and give a sense of scale as well as the personal element. The characters also make sense, even the villain of the piece can be understood if not liked. The pace of the story is like hard core interval sprints, with fast jogging between the running. Not a word is wasted, yet still you can smell the burned boats and taste the fear.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 June 2016Thoroughly enjoyable.
believable characters that you sympathise with.
Non-stop action.
And it is a historical novel.
By this I mean a novel that is keyed into the historical records we have, to the archaeology.
You get a real feel of life back in the time of Attila the Hun, with all its richness and complexity, and not some cartoon version.
All of this makes the action more vivid.
The history is there and serves the plot, but it never gets in the way.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 March 2015An excellent read from start to finish, I could feel my blood rushing just as young Prince Hengest must have felt. Page's book is a real Page turner (sorry for the pun!)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2015Great historical fiction tale; lots of action, lots of meticulously researched background detail. There is even some keen insight into fight psychology. I'm looking forward to the next installment!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 March 2015Shieldwall: Barbarians! tells the tale of Hengest, a young Jute prince leading an expedition in search of his kidnapped sister. Ranged against him are not only her Saxon kidnappers, but also chiefs within his own band constantly jockeying with him for control - and the occasional attempt of outright murder.
The storytelling is fast paced, skillfully weaving action and intrigue, with well fleshed out characters. Far from being portrayed as an all conquering barbarian hero, Hengest has his share of doubts and weaknesses even as he tries to keep up the image of the perfect war-chief before his men. Similarly, his nemesis within his own ranks has been given a rich - if thoroughly unlikeable - personality. The character of his people - and others they encounter - is also beautifully illustrated by their actions - their boasts, challenges, taunts and Oaths. These conversations as they try to cheer or put down each other or simply interact with others introduce a slight element of humour which is genuinely funny and in no way forced.
This helps lighten up an otherwise very gritty story. Despite Hengest's superior skill, combat is always presented as grim, chaotic and uncertain; doubly so when the Jutes enter the unfamiliar world of city warfare.
Overall: A fine tale well told, which leaves one wanting to read the next in the series.

Very action driven and quick paced. Hopefully book 2 is still in the works.

5.0 out of 5 stars this one is pretty violent. Which is cool with me
For a young adult novel, this one is pretty violent. Which is cool with me, but you'd probably like to know that if you're considering buying it for a kid.
Basically, PG13, no sex or cursing, some berzerk murder.
Seems like this is a great series, which explores a lesser known period of history (early migration/ "Viking" / dark ages).
The story's protagonist is very likeable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is the sort of book I'd have read over and over again when I was younger. I hope there is a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
Great read, like all the best bits of a Bernard Cornwell series all in one novel.
