A Pet for Christmas: A Soldier’s Holiday Promise (A Veteran's Christmas Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 124 ratings

Kelly Kennedy thought her life was finally on track. Engaged to the man of her dreams and with a baby on the way, she reassures her five-year-old daughter, Bree, that the father she picked for Christmas still loves her.

Unfortunately, war veteran Tyler Manning has been away most of the year. Recovering from PTSD isn’t easy. Rather than worry Kelly, Tyler spends his time traveling to Afghanistan to work at a children's charity he founded.

Kelly decides to distract Bree with promises of a pet for Christmas. When Tyler is taken hostage by terrorists, she finds it hard to convince Bree that they will truly be a family in time for Christmas.

A Pet for Christmas is a sequel to A Father for Christmas. While it can be read as a standalone, you'll get more of the relationship aspect between Kelly, Tyler, and Bree by reading A Father for Christmas first.

It will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with my blog that I love Rachel Ayala's books. This is a continuation of the novel A Pet for Christmas. This one had me holding my breath and praying a lot! Tyler went back to Afghanistan leaving Kelly, Bree and their unborn son in the US. He gets in a load of really hot water----Meanwhile 5 year old Bree has told Santa what she really wants for Christmas and Santa tells her never to tell anyone else!! You will totally understand when you do find out what it is! I found myself with tears running down my face at the ending-very happy and hopeful tears. Rachelle Ayala has done it again!! These two short novels are a must read!!

And one final last word--G-d Bless ALL the veterans from all the wars-they are truly heroes.

**I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.**

If you read and loved A Father for Christmas, then you are going to love this.

We pick up the story around Thanksgiving, Kelly is pregnant and Tyler is is back in Afghanistan. This story will really tug at your emotions as we see Kelly deal with explaining to Bree why Tyler had to go away and the jealousy she is feeling towards her unborn brother.

We also get the story from Tyler as well, which I thought was great as we get to see and feel what is happening to him out in Afghan. When he get caught up in some trouble I think my heart stopped for a second and I just prayed that it would all be ok.

This was a brilliant read and very eye opening to the life of a vet dealing with life after the army. My brother has severed in several wars and whilst he wont talk about it, we are sure there is some kind of PTSD that he is dealing with.

An amazing follow-up to A Father For Christmas, which I reviewed yesterday. Kelly and Tyler are engaged, with a baby boy on the way---and Bree is feeling as though she might be replaced in Papa's heart. Bree wants to find her "real" father, and she also wants a puppy for Christmas.

As if that weren't enough, Tyler gets taken hostage in Afghanistan, and it starts to look as though Kelly may now be raising TWO children on her own. Will there be another Christmas miracle to bring this family back together, or will the holidays be overshadowed by grief?

There is more suspense to this story than the previous one. That's not a bad thing, and it keeps the reader engaged, wanting to know what will happen next.

The story alternates viewpoints between Kelly and Tyler, so that we understand what is happening to both of them. Reading Tyler's segments was very emotional, and you feel as if you are right there with him.

I sincerely hope this won't be the last we hear from this group of characters!

**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.**

Tyler is now a civilian contractor, but his military training and roots are a strong element of his character. Even suffering from PTSD and survivor guilt, he continues to do his best to improve life in Afghanistan. Although his girlfriend, Kelly, is pregnant with his first child, and he loves Kelly's precocious five year old daughter, Bree, as his own, his sense of duty sends him to Afghanistan to prepare his foundation project for winter. The plans are for Tyler to return home to his blossoming family before the holidays.

In a war torn country, plans can not be counted on. Neither can every person
Not only is the foundation project not working as designed, a massive explosion has Tyler running for his life. He cannot contact anyone to help him and the stress takes a toll on Kelly's high risk pregnancy.
Bree is dealing with an identity crisis of her own. All of this as Christmas, which is supposed to be a peaceful, joyous, family time, nears. Kelly begins to doubt Tyler's true motivations.

Filled with suspense, emotions, and continual challenges, this is a soul searching story of survival and strength for each of the main characters.

I did receive this book in exchange for honest feedback.

5.0 out of 5 stars a deeply touching and utterly heart-wrenching story
Reviewed in the United States on 15 August 2015

A Pet for Christmas is a deeply touching and utterly heart-wrenching story of learning to fight for a once in a lifetime love that transforms you into the person you always wanted to become. What a beautiful family we find under development within the pages of this wonderful story! Just as in life nothing is smooth sailing for long, and if we want something bad enough, we have to work hard and never give up. Questioning our circumstances is only normal because through that process we either find that we want it more than we thought or we are ready to let it go and walk away. No matter what, you should always follow your heart because it will never lead you astray.

Tyler continues his struggle with PTSD, but this time around he isn’t alone. While this should comfort him, it actually rips his heart to shreds as he watches the painful effects on his family. The guilt is almost too much to bear, and in an attempt to bring some peace to those he loves, he leaves them behind to find some solace in trying to undo his sins from the past. Kelly loves Tyler will all her heart, and her hearts breaks as she watches him deteriorate before her eyes. She longs to help him, but with the pressures of work and family, she knows her efforts are lacking. All she can do is stand by him as he decides to travel to the other side of the world to try and make a difference. He leaves with her heart safely tucked next to his. Will the heart fight for what it wants, or will unwanted complications and a bleak future convince them to give up and walk away for good?

If I thought I fell in love with Kelly and Tyler in A Father for Christmas, I was very much mistaken. This deeper view into their hearts and lives brought with it a more intense appreciation for each of these beautiful characters. They are both hurting, and it’s only their faith in God, family, and each other that will help them through this time of intense trial. Anything worth having is unquestionably worth any amount of heartache and suffering that we have to endure along the way. Watching the love between these amazing people grow and blossom even more than it already had was an extraordinary experience that is truly beyond words. This is a remarkable love story that goes beyond two people to encompass a beautiful little girl and an amazing extended family.

My heart never tires of the spectacular masterpieces that seem to effortlessly flow from the heart of Rachelle Ayala. She is truly a gifted and powerful author that can touch the deepest part of the soul! No matter how many of her books I read, I always find a new way that she has changed even the smallest part of my heart. The impact of her words is truly boundless, and through her stories I have come to never underestimate the influence of a well-crafted journey of the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars This story is more than just love and christmas

This story is more than just love and christmas. This has a very deep story about an former american soldier in Afghanistan and his new life with girlfriend, step daughter and a son on its way. Its a story filled with feelings, love, and frustration.

I like that you get to follow both Kelly and Taylor. The fight Kelly has with her feelings, with the baby on the way and a young daughter who sometimes asks for things she dont know so much about. and then we have Taylor, stuck in a country he now realise he has to leave, captured and not knowing when or if he ever will come home.

I like everything about this story. It is so well written and so deep. It has a lot of holiday feelings but its more than a sweet easy to read lovestory around christmas. it has more and this is a story you can read at any time of the year because it is so good.

Sure I can get annoyed about Bree and her behaviour but she is a very young child and she is sweet and innocent but sometimes ask for to much and act very spoild but then maybe that is her way of dealing with things in the story and her fears of being left behind when her baby brother will be born because Taylor isnt her real father.

I have no children of my own so I dont know how they really act in this situation and I hope I will never find out becaue no one should have to go through what Taylor does and what that makes the family go through.

This is a story that I so love and it gives me hope and also makes me think about all the men and women out there fighting for our freedom and that has been out there fighting for it. I would never support a war but I will support the brave men, woman and animals out there, fighting for my rights, my freedom and my safty.

I live in a country, and have always done, that isnt so involved in the wars, we dont have an army like americans do. But I will tonight send a prayer to each and every one of them and hope they are their families are safe and sound.

May God bless you and keep you safe.

I hope a lot of people will read this book because it is very well written and is a very good story and I know it will affect so many people out their in so many different ways.

This story was so beautiful that I laughed, cried, sat on the edge of my seat. A Pet for Christmas continues the story of Tyler, Kelly Bree and Kelly and Tyler's unborn baby. With Tyler in Afghanistan working with the organization he helped put together and Kelly trying to keep everything together back home things start to get strained. Then Tyler goes missing and Kelly has complications with her pregnancy. Bree tells Santa she wants a dog and a special gift for Christmas that she won't tell anyone what it is. This is a story that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Can the love of two people be enough, it can if you fight hard enough for it. Through their strong faith in God and their love for each other they prove they can be the family they were meant to be. This was such a beautiful story, I loved every page and read it in one sitting.
