Lord of the Things: The Mellow Hip of the Thing Kindle Edition
This is most definitely a story for those who do not take things seriously. It's intended as an affectionate parody of JRR Tolkien's seminal work but as with all such things, hardcore aficionados may take umbrage!

About the author

I have been writing fiction, mainly comedy, science fiction or fantasy (often a mixture of comedy and science fiction) for quite a while now, at least in various forms; for some time game design became my main focus but towards the end of 2016 I started veering towards writing my first novel (at long last!) and also some children's books. (Becoming a dad has changed me quite a bit...)
I started writing in my teen years and am now older than I care to admit. Hopefully before I'm senile I will manage to get a few novels published (okay, I'm not THAT old really).
As well as writing and game designing, I've also become reasonably proficient at voice acting and editing sound effects in the course of making my own games or helping out with others' games.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 March 2018What a fresh take on a Tolkien parody! Great light read that will make you laugh out loud. :)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 March 2018An affectionately anarchic riff on The Fellowship of the Ring.
The characters and situations are definitely inspired by the original text, but in most cases are so warped that it will be a truly novel experience even for die hard fans. This is Lord of the Rings via fever dream.
Dialogue is free-flowing (a little too free, perhaps) and surreal, with the fourth wall frequently obliterated and plenty of moments where the author is laughing at the situation right along with the reader. This works much of the time, but does occasionally stray into being tiresome.
Mellow Hip is clearly borne of a great love for the source material, although this also proves to be it's biggest flaw. The story leaps and tumbles along like a runaway freight train, crashing through each iconic Tolkein set piece without stopping to explain much along the way. Readers unfamiliar with the Lord of the Rings (and I'm sure there must be at least one or two left) will be left feeling lost and disoriented.
This is especially frustrating as the author does sometimes hit a great gag or a winning idea, but the larger context (and, with it, narrative coherency) always seems just out of reach.
