About the author

Cardeno C. - CC to friends - is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few "awwws" into a reader's day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. Heartwarming Stories. Strong Relationships. Forever Love.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 March 2015I loved this. I'm a fan of cardeno c and this was a great offering. I loved the way at the start Hugh had no clue why his Siphon had acted the way he did when it was as clear as day to the reader. I loved how he slowly understood the problem and got closer to the newly named Johnnie. It's a great story and the subject matter is one not often covered in books - often the MC has a history of abuse but here it shows doing nothing can be as damaging as physical trauma- if you read the book you will soon understand my meaning and its well worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 April 2015I loved this book. Great story. Again another wonderful book by the author
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 March 2015A truly wonderful 'finding love' story that includes a strong hero who is flawed but makes good on his mistakes, and a wonderful sensitive overload hero who forgives. Cardeno C writes so very well that the reader is drawn in from the outset, and I immediately felt strongly about the two main characters. Not as funny as some Cardeno C books, it is as clever and brilliant and emotional as usual. If you like M/M at all, you MUST read this book!
One of my favorite bits is where Johnnie describes why he lives too read. Same here Johnnie, same here! Caroline.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2016I really, really loved Johnnie (character rather than book) I disliked Hugh as much as I loved Johnnie, not sure what era this was supposed to be set in but the only way I could get my head around it was somehow they were one of the first mated pairs?
How Hugh treated Johnnie for 10 years was horrendous, to the extent that Johnnie attempted suicide more than once, and almost succeeded. Highly was a selfish, egotistical b*****d, who only changed once his life was in danger. And yes he did change for the better but only in private,
This writer's Mates series is one of my favourites, I even have them in pb, that's maybe why I struggle with this one, just doesn't do it for me. It was still well written, that's why it has 3*, but each to their own. Just not for me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2015With so many shifter books out there, and the instantaneous 'knowing' someone is your mate, having a book based on the premise that there are no mates and 'free love' is the way, and having a happy society that functions that way is a refreshing change. And yes these to come together but in a way outside the social norm. The whole pack comes alive and you fall in love. I want more in this world!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 April 2015Darkness into light. Loneliness into love. This is a story that is seeped in sadness as we see the despair that Johnnie feels of being surrounded by people but being always in the shadows and ignored. His fate is linked to that of Hugh's.
A paranormal story about lion shifters. Hugh is Premier of the Pride. As Premier he holds a huge amount of power and needs a Siphon to help contain it. Johnnie is his Siphon. Without a Siphon, Hugh dies. Johnnie has spent his entire life in the shadows, known as the Siphon but not one single person has taken the time to get to know him. Johnnie takes extra-ordinary steps to end this. It is only then that Hugh actually takes a long, hard look at Johnnie and starts to see him as an individual.
As they grow closer, their bond grows stronger. Their relationship develops into something so beautiful, sweet and hot that you fall a little deeper for both Hugh and Johnnie as the story unfolds. From sadness to happiness, there are plenty of awww moments that make it a special read.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 February 2020Hugh is what was known as a Premier Lion shifter and needs a Siphon to help control his power but poor neglected Johnnie has been invisible to the pack until now
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2015I brought it because it was recommended by amazon based on a book I had recently read and loved. Also the other five star reviews looked promising. How wrong could I be. The premise of the book was good, two lion shifters who are at the opposite ends of the hierarchy system learning to love and respect one another despite and perhaps because of their differences.
Yet what I found completely unforgivable was how Johnnie is treated by his pride and the other hero (the premier or Hugh). At the start of the book he doesn’t even have a name. As the author explained Siphon’s make it possible for the Premiers to live after a certain point. Without them siphoning off the Premier’s excess power they implode upon themselves. They are also extremely rare with only 1 in 500,000 lion shifters being born a siphon. That compares to the 1 in 5,000 Premier lions that are born. Given this I was expecting the Siphon to be treated with respect and care. Perhaps overly protected, slightly naive. I was not prepared for them to be completely neglected, abused and seen as sub-human or sub-shifter.
The book starts with Johnnie trying to kill himself, which in turn harms the Premier. Rather than the pride being concerned over Johnnie’s attempted suicide it is viewed as selfish because he dared to indirectly harm the Premier. The pride ties him up and leaves him in a room to wait until the Premier is ‘able to deal with him’; he has just tried to take his own life and not one person from his pride asks why. All of this occurs from the Premier's POV and at no time does he show any indication of caring about the Siphon or Johnnie, but instead is irritated at him for threatening the security of the pride.
Is it surprising that someone whose entire life has revolved around someone so selfish, egotistical and rude that they haven’t even bothered to ask if they have a name, would want to end it? Seriously, Johnnie has been completely ignored for his entire upbringing before being fundamentally sold to the Premier. Yet despite that he manages to be a more decent human being / shifter than Hugh or the Premier.
The one redeeming feature in this book was Johnnie who was so sweet, caring, smart and sexy. I wish he had been given a HEA with someone who deserved him. Someone who could have saved him from Hugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars objectivity is the key
This is a very interesting and entertaining book about two people born into a certain position in society who act the way they are expected to act until something propels them to change. Hugh was born a Premier Lion and Johnnie was born a Siphon Lion and those roles have very delineated aspects to them. I never hated Hugh for him treatment of Johnnie because he just went along with how things have always been. I didn't hate Johnnie's pride for treating him the way they did because if they hadn't, I suspect his fate would'v been much worse given that he came from a weak, dying, sick and hungry pride that couldn't have protected him if word had gotten out that he existed. To me, both characters were a victim of the place in society they were born. Hugh was selfish because he's a premier lion and was courted and coveted by multiple prides, so his sense of self-worth and ego were inflated. Johnnie was selfless because that's what a Siphon is supposed to be; thier only purpose is to hold a premier's power. Now, as neglected and insignificant as Johnnie was viewed, he was the one with all the power in the relationship and Hugh finally realises this when Johnnie sets aside his selflessness and does something for himself. Granted, it was to attempt suicide, but it was the catalyst that took Hugh down some notches for him to see that it's not all about him and that he needs to give the correct consideration to the person keeping him alive. When these two finally step outside of the role that society has given them is when the story takes off and becomes truly a great read. If you choose to read this story, and I highly recommend you do, you have to take the world as the author gives it to you and don't interject your own beliefs because if you do, you'll hate Hugh intensely and might never truly appreciate his growth.

4.0 out of 5 stars love
I’m a sucker for this author, and this book hit the things I need in a shifter book. First shout out to a Black shifter. This is the first book I’ve read with a Black MC shifter. So thank you. This book was about realizing you have everything you only need to open your eyes to see. This was a beautiful beginning story. I think if I was thinking about fated mates started this would be the book that would be book number one. It slowly touched on things that we’ve come to know as fated mates. I could see it going beyond to the beginning of alpha omega mpreg. The writing was great, the smexy was amazing, I just wish there were more books in this world.
