When the Wedding of the Century takes place at Cooper's Beach, the guest list turns out to be deadly.

Life is going great for Doubtless Bay's kooky private investigator, Summer O'Dare. She's got a new boarder staying at her house by the beach. She just wrapped up a case for the local wildlife sanctuary. She has a hot date planned for this evening.

And then her dog finds a dead body on the beach.

The case has the full attention of the local police, but it's not the only unsolved mystery. A stranger has washed up on the beach. He doesn't know his name, he doesn't have any identification, and the police are too busy investigating a murder.

Cue O'Dare & Sons Investigations!

On the job, finally able to pay her tab at the Coffee Cube for all those donuts she ate last week, Summer gets down to business identifying the stranger. But things don't go exactly as planned. Soon Summer finds herself surrounded by guilty people, mixed up in weird and frankly kinky situations, and hunted by the murderer.

Just as well she’s got a few tricks up her sleeve. And a penchant for donuts. But can Summer find the murderer in amongst the plethora of suspects? Or in amongst the plethora of donuts! Or has Summer's luck - and moment of happiness - run out?

What can I say only I absolutely loved this book. I could read about Summer O'Dare and Detective Douche all day long. The murder on the beach and the mystery man with amnesia will have you guessing to the very end. And I love the description Nicola gives every time Summer driver her car farting and burping along the road. And who wouldn't love an aunt like Lady Sadie. Nicola I hope that you give us more of Summer and Alex soon. Pretty please.

Falling into a Nicola Claire book is always a treat, and the O'Dare series is no exception. I was instantly transported to New Zealand and surrounded by the fun, quirky characters of Doubtless Bay. Summer once again finds herself on the trail of a murderer, and with the help of Detective Douche (aka the sexy Danvers!), they have a mystery to solve. I love the chemistry between Summer and Danvers, and the banter they share is such fun. Loving Summer is a great read and perfect for Cozy Mystery lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars The heat is on in Northland, NZ and Summer O'Dare is on the case!
Reviewed in the United States on 1 April 2023
The heat is still on in Northland New Zealand, and Summer O’Dare is still on the case! Summer may be winding down, but Doubtless Bay is still hopping with tourists and determined to end the season with a bang.

    Summary:

Who knew attending a wedding on the beach could be so deadly? Summer O’Dare certainly didn’t. Especially not with it being heralded as the “Wedding of the Century”. But of course, just when life is going good for the kooky P.I., her dog would find a dead body within feet of the wedding venue. With her hot date with a sexy detective put on hold, and the fact the victim was a Doubtless Bay native, Summer is all over the case even if it isn’t official. Northlanders look after their own, after all. Coincidentally, the murder isn’t the only mystery at present. What are the chances a stranger with amnesia would wash up on shore at the very moment the body is discovered? With the police engaged in finding a murderer, Summer gets the contract for finding out just who the Stranger Danger really is. Maybe now she’ll be able to square away her Coffee Cube tab. Summer gets down to business quickly, but nothing seems to go to plan. With shaky leads and kooky feelings, the number of suspects begins to pile up. Who’s guilty of what? And is it just her or are things getting a little kinky, too? Luckily, Summer has a secret or two 😉and a few tricks up her sleeve when confronted with danger. Can she ID the amnesiac and find a murderer amongst all the hullabaloo or has time run out for the donut-loving local?

Loving Summer was the exact book I didn’t know I needed to read. What a fun, quirky, cozy mystery! Summer is just as irrepressible and kooky as usual. I absolutely love that we have started to see her open up over this Summer in Doubtless Bay. Summer is nothing if not independent, but it was readily apparent in this third installment just how free she’s become since meeting her in Chasing Summer. The level of comfort and care she’s found in those around her has helped her to blossom, and be more of herself, give more of herself than I think she has before. Summer definitely took some risks in this book, but it was interesting to see just what she was capable of when put in a tight spot. I think it also really opened her up to analyze her vulnerabilities and ask for and accept help from others. I adore Detective Douche (a.k.a. the very sexy Alex Angel Danvers😉). I love the interactions and banter between him and Summer. It’s all so sweet, sexy and brings a smile to my face. I couldn’t be happier with where their relationship is taking them, and I can’t wait to read more of them together. Overall, Loving Summer was a quick read that I did not want to put down. The mystery pulled me in right away and kept me guessing until nearly the end. The stunner for me, though, is the supporting cast. Not only is Summer fantastic, but her friends and family are just as entertaining. All the usual suspects were in attendance from Tia Maria, Mikey, and Stan to a very dirty-minded Aunt Sadie. And of course, Doug had to steal a few of the scenes with his dopey, but endearing antics. Drifting away into the world of Doubtless Bay and a murder mystery is the absolute best way to welcome warmer weather. I’m already looking forward to my reread, and can’t wait to see what adventures Summer takes us on next Summer at Cooper’s Beach. ♡
