The author DK leads us through her personal journey with chronic pain. Starting when she was just a teen who loved to dance and perform, to present day, how she overcame pain, and how she is now helping others. She also shares stories written by her clients, which makes this book very relatable. Throughout, there are many sprinklings of evidence-based science, which explains the theory of pain in these different scenarios.

The science of physical pain and how external factors such as societal pressure, stress, fear and beliefs are interconnected (& often overlooked in western medicine) is well written, and outlines the importance of recognising these when managing chronic pain. Each chapter ends with reflective questions you can apply to your own unique situation, guiding you to have a better understanding of your own journey.

As a physiotherapist and Pilates teacher myself, I thought this was a great acknowledgment that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the complexities of pain, especially in the healthcare and movement professions. This book provides hope for those wanting to get back to a fuller life, or those assisting others, by incorporating movement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Movement really does heal

If you are dealing with chronic pain and looking for a solution, I highly recommend DK's unique approach to reclaiming your life again. She bravely shares her personal struggle with pain and the inspiring discoveries she has made throughout her journey which she has used to benefit herself, her clients, and now the wider population. This beautifully written book is backed by research and provides prompts you can use to gain a deeper understanding of your pain and how you can establish an enjoyable movement practice of your own. I also loved reading about client's success stories with movement. This book will transform lives!

5.0 out of 5 stars Relatable and may help you visualize new possibilities in your body

“The stories you carry inform your belief system. And your beliefs about your physical abilities directly affect the choices you make about engaging in movement.”

DK shares her life journey which can be vulnerable at times, but is truly essential when talking about a subject like chronic pain. It’s relatable and helps you visualize the possibilities of what might come next.

I love the prompts from DK that help you understand your own pain story and how to counteract how you’ve been thinking about pain and movement. I greatly enjoyed the words of encouragement from different people that were sprinkled throughout the book. They give you extra perspectives, which I really enjoyed.

The format of the book makes it easy to read for the first time and will make it easy to go back to certain sections for reference.

I think anyone who has stopped their movement practice due to pain would highly benefit from DK’s personal stories and her guidance throughout the book. Anyone who teaches movement to others should read this book because it can help you understand your clients’ perspectives and stories.

Whether you read this book at your leisure, or do a week by week chapter, this book may help you overcome the ideas you might have about pain in your own body .

Chronic pain has been the norm for many of us, which can get pretty discouraging. I loved reading the stories DK shared in this book because not only are they relatable, she shares how each person has evolved which shows that healing is possible! I also loved DK’s emphasis on the mind-body connection when working to resolve the issue especially the role our brains play in our pain perception! Such an easy read full of information & stories - perfect for anyone looking for ways to work on that mind-body connection, learn more about our nervous system, or overall just want to know that it IS possible to live and reclaim an active life.
