Hi, I’m Karen, nice to meet you.

I’m a Substack expert with two successful publications and tens of thousands of dollars per year in reliable recurring revenue – from just a few hours per week.

I started my first Substack publication in 2021 with zero subscribers, and grew it into a sustainable (and super enjoyable) side stream of income for my food safety consulting business.

At the time there was very little help or guidance available for newbie Substackers like me, so I set out to share everything I was learning while I built my audience and launched monetization.

Of course, I used Substack to share what I was learning, creating a second, free publication, and again beginning with zero subscribers. I used a pseudonym out of respect for my food safety audience, who expect my full attention.

By now you’re wondering exactly what my publications are (I’ve lost track of how many supposed ‘experts’ with Amazon books about Substack don’t appear to be doing well on the platform – I’m not one of those).

My paid publication, published under my real name, is The Rotten Apple. It’s a Substack bestseller.

My free publication, published as Karen Cherry, is Pubstack Success. It’s got a thriving community of readers and raving fans.

When I’m not working in my food safety business, or helping Substack creators with one-to-one sessions and group coaching, you can find me near the beach in Australia, with a cold drink in my hand and sand between my toes.

Cheers!

A to-the-point primer on setting up a Substack publication. Lots of ideas and examples on how the platform's being used to build a community of subscribers, including paid. The book covers the basics with essentials and checklists to go from starting to established.

Different case studies show the different ways to set out your stall for what suits you. There are also suggestions about alternative and contrary views to consider when looking to open up to paying subscribers. The work still needs to be done, but this book is a hand held to get everything in place. One to read through, then to go through again while doing the work. A good way to put best foot forward for monetising whatever you'll be writing about in a Substack publication.

Karen Cherry explains various aspects of the Substack platform, and suggests courses of action, in a clear and logical way. The three good aspects of the book in particular are (a) there is some repetition, which means that you can dive in anywhere and be assured of not missing important points; (b) the author makes it all seem doable, even for the diehard cynics amongst us; and (c) it's all delivered in a very matter-of-fact way, without the over-the-top exuberance that is all too often a feature of this kind of manual. Highly recommended.

This clearly structured, knowledgeable, and nuanced overview saves readers a lot of time figuring things out for themselves. What I like most is that it’s an honest account, not an empty promise. Plus, Karen offers many real-life examples to illustrate the ideas and concrete, actionable steps to make money on Substack. For example, the chapters on how often one should post and on conversions contain valuable insights I hadn’t heard of before.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are new to Substack you want a clear, concise, complete introduction. You want this book.

First, Karen Cherry sets expectations right away. "This is not Substack for Dummies." So, no pictures of how to tweak settings, etc. Instead she has put together a very readable and practical guide to setting up your Substack for success, which is less about look and feel and more about understanding what you are offering, creativity, and developing a following.

Second, the organization of chapters makes sense.

The first chapter covers five ways to make money. I personally had not even thought about "donational publications", for example. What Cherry is doing here is a mini-business course disguised as a how-to for Substack. But the core principles are applicable across any business. How are you going to make money? You need to know if you want to succeed.

The second chapter covers everything you need to set yourself up for success. This second chapter alone is worth getting the book. Cherry takes you through sorting out what you are trying to accomplish with your Substack, figuring out who your audience is, and steps on how to find and engage your audience. Some advice should be well understood, for example be consistent. But, have you thought about what that means? Post daily? Weekly? What is going to be sustainable for you? If you follow her advice, you will find the right path early, and save yourself from a lot of fumbling around.

The rest of the book is about getting paid and how all this could change your life. But the meat is in the first two chapters.

There is some repetition as you go along, and at first I thought it was just some cut and paste laziness. But then I thought further. Some people may simply jump to the section that they find interesting, and miss some of the up-front things to consider. It hit me as I was listening to a local sports station. They are necessarily repetitive because people listen at different times of the day. They can't assume everyone has already heard the latest scores or injury report. So, I appreciated that you could jump around and still get the basic information that you really should have if you are serious about your Substack adventure. Are you serious? Then buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive quick guide to Substack strategy

I’ve been writing on Substack for a year and still learned quite a bit from this book. The author makes clear it’s not a “Substack 101 or how to get started on Substack” guide; there are plenty of other resources for that. Instead this is more a Substack 201, advanced strategy for those seriously looking to grow and monetize their newsletter.

The content is laid out in an easy to read format, with prompts and exercises to help the reader form and execute their own strategy. The author effectively outlines pros and cons for the various ways to monetize on Substack. It’s clear, to the point, with no fluff.

After reading this, you’ll have a clear idea of what steps you should take to advance your Substack game. There’s a lot of content out there about Substack and one could cobble together a plan from researching on their own. Or you could grab this book, save yourself time, and get advice and ideas from people who are actually making it work on Substack.
