DAVID E. MANUEL grew up in Houston, Texas and attended the University of Houston, receiving degrees in history and political science. After college, he worked for a few years in the corporate office of an offshore drilling company. In the mid-1980s he moved to the Washington DC area and took a job with the U.S. Government.

David lives in Northern Virginia with his wife, a free-lance writer, and their English Shepherd, Falco, who, as far as we know, is not a secret government agent.

If you would like to tell David what you think of Killer Protocols or the Richard Paladin series, but you're too shy to leave a review, you can find him and send him a message at Goodreads.

Top review from the United States

This short story is one on its own. I've never read anything quite like it before, although how to explain without spoiling it?

The entire story centres on Evan, who wakes up with a desperate craving for a cigarette, from there doing what needs to be done to fulfill that need that is all-consuming.

The description of Evan's experience—the desperation, the satisfaction, the salience—is utterly fascinating. The response of the world around him, and his reaction to it, is like a social study, an insight into the life of a cigarette smoker.

Sudden Addiction - for me that pretty much sums up the experience of reading this short story!
