Big Cat Attacks: Accounts of Big Cat Attacks [Print Replica] Kindle Edition

3.4 3.4 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

What happens when big cats attack? You will be surprised just how many big cat attacks there have been.

The book is a partial listing (741) of incidents in the U.S. involving captive exotic cats since 1990. The U.S. incidents have resulted in the deaths of 23 humans, 16 adults and 5 children, the additional mauling of 252 more adults and children, 266 escapes, the killing of 146 big cats, and 133 confiscations.

There have also been 248 big cat incidents outside the U.S. that have resulted in the deaths of 85 humans and the mauling of 134 humans by captive big cats. These figures only represent the headlines that Big Cat Rescue has been able to track.

Because there is no reporting agency that keeps such records the actual numbers are certainly much higher.

I went into this book knowing full well what this book entails. It is a collection of accounts of big cat–lion, tigers, leopard–attacks. The listing of attacks is only a partial listing, and the figure only represents headlines that the Sanctuary was able to track. Unfortunately, there is no agency to keep records of such attacks. Common sense must lead us to assume that the number is much higher than what is reported in the novel.

It is already the middle of February 2017. There have already been four big cat attacks in January. The frequency of these attacks is alarming to me.

While the subject matter is about animal attacks, there was at least one time that an entry was about a big cat and her kittens were videotaped. There was no attack, and I was a bit confused as for why it would be listed with the others. It was obvious that the cat was treated as a pet. While I understand the reasoning why an escaped exotic cat threatens local wild cats, I feel that this makes Chapter One of the book go off on a tangent. It would be better to place it in Chapter Two.

Chapter Two of Big Cat Attacks: Accounts of Big Cats focused on keeping an exotic cat as a pet.

Baskins gives excellent detail as for why these magnificent creatures would be horrible pets. For example, big cats are twelve times stronger than people. If you ever own a domesticated cat, then you know that scratches come with the partnership between your cat and yourself. Now, imagine the carnage that a big cat can inflict even if he or she were playing.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who is curious on how many animal attacks that there are during a particular time frame, as well as animal rights advocates.

Up to about 65% of this book would have gotten it a 5 star rating--then it happened and continued through to the last page. The excellent story telling came to a screeching halt and the authors religious beliefs came to the forefront. The story line came in second to the constant preaching, on and on it went. It seemed like no matter what character the author was focusing on, the preaching continued. I actually found myself skipping through the sermons to try to get back to the meat of the story. It was so annoying I almost didn't finish the story. This author has a beautiful writing style, but a reader can only take so much preaching. It does grow old after awhile. I will not read anything else my this author as I don't want to sit through the sermons again. A beautiful story ruined by never ending preaching and bringing religion into almost every page after the 65% point. If the author wanted to share her beliefs with readers, why not write a book of her beliefs and leave the story telling out of it? I was very disappointed in how this story finished. Let me preface my comments by saying that I am a Christian who attends church regularly. I have read most of the famous Christian authors. If I want a religious book, I will turn to a Christian author. If I want non-fiction, fiction, history, etc. I will turn to than genre. I wanted a good story to read and instead I was taken to church and it wasn't even Sunday.

This book does document mostly unbiased accounts of incidents involving big cats in captivity. Included in these accounts are two attacks at Wildlife on Easy Street. These incidents are the ONLY ones in the entire book that that are written in a way that absolves the organization of blame for the attacks. What is NOT included is the fact that Big Cat Rescue WAS Wildlife on Easy Street. Ms. Baskin ran a place where people could pay to interact with wild cats, the same type of place that she now villifies. She apparently had a change of heart and changed the organization's name from Wildlife on Easy Street to Big Cat Rescue and then she and her newly name changed organization started bad mouthing almost every other cat rescue in the United States. While there are many so called rescues that are just places that exploit their charges, there are also many that actually DO take good care of their rescued cats. Big Cat Rescue maintains that ONLY THEY are deserving of donations and ONLY THEIR methods of exotic husbandry are acceptable. I spent over 7 years volunteering at one of the good, non profit rescues. We were attacked by Ms. Baskin and her organization's members. While I do think that Big Cat Rescue takes good care of their animals, the groups practice of criticizing other rescues and insisting that they are the ONLY rescue deserving of don't is detrimental to other rescues. The blatant hypocrisy in this book is hard me me to stomach. The fact that this book glorifies Ms. Baskin and Big Cat Rescue, yet fails to mention their history is unprofessional and devious.

Don't bother. Little substance. If you read anything on this topic before, then you've already read what's in this book.
