ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Orphaned at age sixteen, Frances Tepper put herself through the University of Southern California, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude. She married her high school sweetheart and returned to her home state, New York, raising children and working for 4-H as a program assistant. In 1992 Fran embarked on a career that would become her passion for the next twenty years: executive director of the Monroe County Fair and manager of the Fair Association’s events center. During that time she published many columns and essays in local newspapers—and in the fair industry publication Fairs and Expos—about the life of the fair, writing with her trademark candor, insight, and humor. She was eventually elected president of the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs as well as president of the Henrietta Chamber of Commerce, which even named her Business Person of the Year in 2000. Fran retired after twenty years, but “fair fever” is still in her blood, and she can detect the aroma of fried dough from blocks away. She currently lives in Pittsford, New York with her husband. She has three grown children and six grandchildren and loves reading (often a book a day), traveling, video poker, and everything Outlander.
PRAISE FOR FAIR LADY
“Fran was a pioneer and role model for female fair executives in an industry dominated by males in the 90s.”
–Robert W. Johnson, Retired President & CEO, Outdoor Amusement Business Association
“The mixture of humor and hardship is a good reminder to focus on the goals rather than trying to please others.”
–Edward T Rossley, 1st Vice President, NYS Association of Agricultural Fairs, Inc.
“Fair Lady is a laugh-out-loud read highlighting some of the unique and sometimes crazy situations that fair managers face.”
–Margaret O’Neill, former Monroe County 4-H Program Leader

About the author
Orphaned at age sixteen, Frances Tepper put herself through the University of Southern California, graduating magna cum laude. She married her high school sweetheart and returned to New York, her home state, raising three children and working, first as a social worker and then at Cornell Cooperative Extension in the 4-H program. In 1992, she embarked on a career that would become her passion for the next twenty years: executive director of the Monroe County Fair and Recreation Association and manager of the Fair Association’s events center. She was the first woman to hold that position in the fair’s 169-year history, as well as one of the few women to hold that position in the country. Fran retired in 2012, and followed her dream of writing books.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2021This is a must read for anyone who has ever worked in or managed a county fair. I even found it interesting even though I have attended fairs but never worked in one. The author captured her memoirs in an easy to read format with her thoughts and comments organized by subject. She writes with humor and levity and provides an entertaining view of directing a county fair for twenty years that makes you chuckle out loud with some of her honest recollections. Having attended many county fairs in the past, I was glad to hear about all of the ride and food inspections that went on with each fair and the rules they must follow. I never realized how professional the activities were, especially the rides. I was really surprised to learn of all the integrated and complex details that go on in the background behind the scenes. This book will help me enjoy my next fair even more.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2021Only true dedication and love for Fairs could entice anyone to take on bringing a fair back to life. Fran had that in buckets. She never tired of getting the community to be involved in the fair. She never tired of attempting and succeeding to bring the fair as a showcase of celebrating modern agriculture, science and technology. It is always an uphill battle that she accepted with humor and a great deal of aplomb.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2021A wonderfully written behind the scenes look into how a county fair comes to life. Filled with funny stories of both successes and failures over the years of directing the fair, Fran's love and dedication to not only the fair but also the community is evident. A most enjoyable read!
