Marcus taught Thomas to embrace who he is, a sexual submissive who responds to the touch of only one Master. But when Thomas’s father died, his North Carolina family needed him, so Marcus let him go.
Now he knows he made a mistake. Since Thomas abandoned a promising art career in New York, Marcus offers Thomas a way back into it. On one condition—Thomas must spend a week with him in the Berkshires.
Marcus knows he can be a selfish bastard. And he won’t hesitate to use that to give his submissive everything Thomas truly needs.

THIS, this is what I'm looking for; to be grabbed and taken. Take me on a journey, show me things, change my mind, drive me to my knees and pull me back up. I want this experience when I read.
Rough Canvas is a torrent of emotions and want and need and desperation, brutality and passion. Every one of those reactions are stirred up in the reader and explored deeply by the characters. I had no chance here; no chance to hold back and critically view this work. Instead I was pulled in completely and overwhelmed with the intensity of these two main characters and the absolute stunning quality of the writing and the beautiful journey that this story took me on.
I am so grateful that I was recommended this book by deirdre and then harassed :) into finally getting to it by so many others. I can't say thank you enough.
"Art is that which touches us down to the soul, tells us what life's about."
THE STORY
I guess you could say that you're placed right in the middle of this love story. It has a past, present and future and you are exposed to both. This gorgeous romance explores the relationship of two men who can't seem to have what they want or need. Submitting himself to Marcus' Dominance may completely destroy Thomas, but only because he knows when he ultimately has to leave he will be leaving his soul behind.
-- And the power of a submissive's trust could blow away anything a Master had to offer. --
Marcus has this one week to convince Thomas that he belongs to Marcus body and soul. But Marcus hides a dark past from Thomas. It's fascinating watching him learn to expose himself, to trust.
THE CHARACTERS
The best thing about this book is the quality of the characters. Ms. Hill's knowledge of her characters is astounding throughout the book. They remained true to the original impression even while growing and evolving.
Marcus Stanton- An art gallery owner.
"You see into the souls of others more easily. It should make me want to close all doors against you, because my soul is the last thing I want anyone to see."
Thomas Wilder- A gifted erotic artist.
-- The click of the cuffs locking had been an answer to a question in his soul he'd never been brave enough to hear, let alone ask. --
THE WRITING
When an accomplished dancer grabs you, holds you tight and leads you across the floor, they take you where they want you to go. You have no choice but to follow, overwhelmed with the sweeping movement and solid confidence that allows you to just enjoy the experience. That is exactly the kind of control this author has with her words. She steered me the way she wanted me to go. Giving me the confidence to just let go and be absorbed into the story. What a wonderful experience that is.
-- His skin was brown from the Southern sun, the muscles on the rawboned physique nevertheless rolling beneath it like the powerful curve of a waterfall at the break point. --
Joey Hill's astonishing application of word arrangement and usage is a pleasure to read. She was able to illicit the intended result without breaking stride. She gripped me with intense emotional internal dialog. She made the characters memories so vivid it just drove home how deep their emotional connection was. And most of all, she had me completely in love with both protagonists.
Honestly, if I wanted to I could point out a few missteps, but I don't want to. There really wasn't anything that didn't work for me here.

PROS:
- The romance in this book is beautiful and sensuous and just absolutely RIGHT. Hill establishes a strong sexual connection between Marcus and Thomas within 20 pages, and although I worried that Marcus wasn't as emotionally dependent upon Thomas as Thomas was on him, that fear didn't stick around for long. Each character very clearly NEEDS the other.
- The sex is marvelous. I've read other m/m books that I found slightly hotter, but the sex in this book is needy and emotional and lovely. If you're just a Joey W. Hill fan and aren't used to reading m/m, this is as good a book as any to introduce you to the genre. Above all, the sex here--even the scenes in which Marcus punishes Thomas--is an expression of love. It's moderate to fairly hard BDSM, though, so if you're not into that, I'm not sure you'd enjoy it: Thomas even thinks when they're in a BDSM club in one scene, "I can't tell if you hate or love me in this place."
- The two leads sort of take turns providing the emotional strength in the relationship. When one starts to lose sight of who he is or begins to wallow in misery or dwell too much on the past, the other steps up and provides exactly the kind of support his lover needs. It's a dynamic relationship that fairly screams "love" and "friendship" and "devotion."
- Marcus is urbane and sophisticated and on occasion, very sharp and funny. One of my favorite lines of dialogue from him is when Thomas's mother says that New York is not conducive to establishing roots or a home and Marcus replies, "That's right. There are no families in New York. We're all just a bunch of wandering nomads addicted to Starbuck's." (see con below also)
- There are some delightful moments with secondary characters who turn out to be quite different from how I first expected them to be.
CON:
- Marcus can be ever-so-slightly off-putting at times when he's upset. He says some rather awful things to certain people, for example, and toward the end of the book, he goes into a sort of melancholic rage at one point and comes close to endangering one of his dearest friends.
Overall comments: This author is REALLY good at creating three-dimensional characters with deep emotional scars that result from horrible, torturous pasts. Every one of her books that I've read so far portrays a bone-deep connection between the two leads because at least one of them is so damaged that the other character is NECESSARY for his/her survival. I think if you enjoy m/m, this is an excellent read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2013This was not an easy book to read for several reasons. A lot of the tone was mildly depressing and certainly melancholy. I'm not drawn to BDSM, I never like exhibitionist sex, and at times I did not like one of the main characters, Thomas, at all. I read a lot of reviews before buying and finally decided to based upon a review that said not to discount it even if you don't like BDSM. I'm, really glad I listened to that review because it is one of the most beautifully written love stories I have ever read. The pace is very slow and there is a lot of Thomas' inner monologue, which at times was tiresome, but after finishing I decided that the story needed every word written or it wouldn't have been as poignant as it was.
Thomas and Marcus are lovers for several years but Thomas' family cannot accept the fact that he is gay. Things happen and Thomas leaves Marcus to take care of his very conservative, gay bashing family. This story is one of Thomas struggle to find peace within himself enough to stand up to his family and be with the one that he loves and his family's struggle to accept what they have always been taught not to accept. I mentioned above that sometimes I really didn't like Thomas, because of the way he handled things, but realistically I am sure there are many people in real life who struggle with his issues and I can empathize.
It seems that all of this author's stories involve BDSM but I will definitely read another one because of her eloquent writing style that takes the relationship so far beyond sex. This would have been a 5 star for me if there had been more action to go along with all of the contemplation. If you are in the mood for a lot of angst this is a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably my favourite book in this series by Joey W Hill
I love this book so much, I've read it several times now! Thomas and Marcus are amazing characters. Both broken in different ways. Joey W Hill's writing is beautiful, she has a way of telling a story that touches you, it feels so personal, yes it's about two men in a D's relationship, yes it's hot as hell and yes it's a love story, but it does get pretty dark in places, a HEA though. It is a standalone book, but read the whole series anyway, you'll get more out of it as some characters do appear in other books and all of her books are so great, why wouldn't you?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein großartiges Buch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Character driven romance with benefits!
I had to write a review for this book because it affected me so much. It's the book I've long wanted to read, which truly shows that love is love and sex is hot whether straight or gay. I'm a married heterosexual woman but it's irrelevant to whether or not you'll enjoy this book. Joey Hill's books are more satisfying because the characters have depth, passion, layers and are totally believable. I couldn't get enough of Thomas and Marcus and their love story, both were damaged, both needing each other but frightened to take the jump to truly trust the other with their heart and soul...just wonderful. Oh and the sex is sizzling...

5.0 out of 5 stars Rough Canvas
What a beautiful love story,at first i was not sure how i'd reel reading about about a relationship strictly between two men, but i can honestly say it is one of the best erotic, loving, emotional heart pulling stories i have had the pleasure of reading. I have enjoyed all the books in the "Nature of Desire" series but this story completely blew me away! I could quite happily read another book or two on this couple and the people that surround them. Love, love, love Marcus & Thomas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot!!!!
Loved this m/m romance. Not something I would normally go of but the writing was just fantastic and totally loved both the main characters. Would love to read more about them.
