Wisdom in Action - Essays on the Spiritual Life (The Wisdom and Practice Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

3.0 3.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

The title of this book, Wisdom in Action, indicates the slightly different emphasis in this second volume of Raghavan Iyer’s HERMES essays from the first volume, The Dawning of Wisdom. In truth, these jeweled essays in Buddhi Yoga could be gathered together into any number of configurations simply because the writings themselves are so multifaceted and universal in scope. As they embody Universal Good, so too they lend themselves to the purposes of the highest good under whatever name or form. The constant, underlying theme of all these essays is the crucial need for unconditional devotion to Universal Good as a prerequisite for traveling on the spiritual Path. There is simply nothing else that can serve as a substitute for the highest of noble motives for living the spiritual life. But these writings also bear upon the crucial and thorny problem of translating theoria into praxis, and they shed a pristine light upon the obstacles and difficulties encountered by every aspirant who self-consciously chooses to tread the Path of Renunciation. Each of the articles in this book will be found to contain priceless jewels of great philosophical insight and practical advice, and both are linked together at every point by one who long ago passed through and emerged victorious in “this glorious unsought fight which only fortune’s favored soldiers may obtain”. All who come to these writings in the spirit of the true shravaka will find their deepest unasked questions illuminated by the light of the Sanatana Dharma, the Eternal Wisdom, and answered with the oldest and most practical spiritual advice.

Professor Raghavan N. Iyer was an internationally known philosopher and political theorist who devoted his life to the intellectual and spiritual uplift of human society. The only Rhodes Scholar from India in 1950 to Oxford, he secured First Class Honors in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and later earned a D. Phil. Degree in moral and political philosophy. For eight years, he was Fellow and Lecturer in Politics at St. Anthony's College, Oxford, then Visiting Professor at the Universities of Oslo, Ghana and Chicago, and lectured at the College of Europe in Belgium, the Erasmus Seminar in Holland, and at Harvard, Bowdoin, Berkeley, U.C.L.A., Rand Corporation and the California Institute of Technology. He was professor of political philosophy at the University of California, Santa Barbara for 21 years.

His books include Utilitarianism and All That, The Moral and Political Thought of Mahatma Gandhi, The Moral and Political Writings of Mahatma Gandhi (three volumes), The Glass Curtain Between Asia and Europe, Parapolitics: Toward the City of Man, and The Jewel in the Lotus (as editor), and co-authored, with Nandini Iyer, The Descent of the Gods: The Mystical Writings of G.W. Russell-A.E. His books were initially published by Oxford University Press, subsequently by Concord Grove Press (Santa Barbara, CA) and Theosophy Trust Books, and remain available.

During the last years of his life, Prof. Iyer edited these three volumes of The Gupta Vidya, which are a compilation of his writings appearing over 14 years in the journal Hermes, a monthly Theosophical publication. Prof. Iyer saw humanity as socially, politically and spiritually evolving within the turbulent and radically changing world of the 20th and 21st centuries. His message is that a renewed humankind is now emerging, and the contents of these volumes address the causes of the global situation, the nature of this evolution, and the manner in which individuals can participate fully in this collective transformation.

Thus, Prof. Iyer's writings are analytical, visionary, and eminently practical.

An interested read, and those who are interested in theosophy should strongly consider it for their collection. However, it's a bit pricey, and those interested in getting a taste of theosophy at a better value might look elsewhere.
