A Shot at Forgiveness Kindle Edition
A dozen years, two thousand miles, and a law degree after high school, Rafi Steiner continues to harbor resentment toward Isaac Jones, his childhood bully turned NBA star. When Isaac appears at Rafi's favorite restaurant acting like a long-lost friend, Rafi bluntly dismisses him.
But Isaac is tenacious and he has his heart set on the grown-up version of the boy he always wanted and never forgot. The way Isaac sees it, he and Rafi are perfect for each other, if only he could sink the most important shot of his life: his one shot at forgiveness.

About the author

Cardeno C. - CC to friends - is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few "awwws" into a reader's day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. Cardeno's stories range from sweet to intense, contemporary to paranormal, long to short, but they always include strong relationships and walks into the happily-ever-after sunset.
Heartwarming Stories. Strong Relationships. Forever Love.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2013Cardeno C.'s moving and insightful novella, A Shot at Forgiveness, provides a rather different view of the bullying many gay and lesbian children and teens are forced to endure. In this story the bully, Isaac Jones, now 30, has become a National Basketball Association most valuable player. The boy he bullied, Rafael ("Rafi") Steiner, also 30, is an "up-and-coming" real estate lawyer. (Rafi narrates the story.)
It's a dozen years after the bullying stopped, when Rafi and Isaac graduated from high school and went their separate ways, and the bully seeks out the boy he bullied. As Rafi says, Isaac is his "nemesis turned stalker." Is it credible that in some situations the bully is more confused about and tormented by his sexuality than his victim? In my own view, for whatever it's worth, that might explain more than a few cases of bullying.
Without including spoilers in this review, I can say there are even more surprising turns in A Shot at Forgiveness than a famous and wealthy NBA MVP's making contact with his former victim. I can also affirm that the way Cardeno C. shapes the story makes them all believable. They certainly don't happen every day, but who'd wish to write or read about every-day matters?
I must also praise Cardeno C.'s writing style. Rafi tells us: "My bed was usually a revolving door. Men came and went without fanfare or memory." At one point
Rafi and Isaac agree: "The contrast of dark and light, short and tall, bulky and slender" is "hot as hell." Rafi again: "I take whatever comes my way with a grain of salt. Preferably sprinkled along the rim of a margarita glass."
Rafi and Isaac's story won me over. I highly recommend it.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2020** spoiler-ish alert ** Ok, so yeah, a little stalkery, and not much begging for forgiveness, but what it lacks in plausibility and satisfying grovel action, it more than makes up for in devotion, un-closetedness, and hot sex.
Honestly, the stalking wasn't even that extreme. Well, the "hi, I'm going to set up dinner in your house that I technically broke into" thing was slightly creepy an should have thrown up some serious red flags, but Rafi should have practiced safe ATM habits. I mean, he uses a code to get into his place, so why didn't he shield that code from Isaac's view? Now don't twist my words here, I'm in no way condoning any notion that Rafi deserved or invited creepy stalkers, I'm just saying that he should have tried to keep the code private from someone he doesn't fully trust.
That being said, the resolution between the MCs was sweet and short and a bit rushed, exactly what one would expect from a novella. And for the number of pages to contain two hot sex scenes, inner turmoil (wait, what's a lesser form of turmoil but still denotes a frustrating back and forth of reconciling emotions and review of thoughts, words, and events?), and a resolution, I'd say this book packed quite a bit more than other romantic novels I've read with three times the number of pages.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016A Shot at Forgiveness is one of those stories where I'm not quite sure how to rate it after reading. It is a pretty quick read, and would fall under the enemies-to-lovers category, though I don't know that Isaac would see it that way (he'd probably think it's a second chance story...although, well...no).
What this story does have in spades is sarcastic humor, plus one bound and determined NBA star-at least he is now that he's going after what-or who-he wants. And while the way the story is written might have you wondering just how stalker-like Isaac would need to be for Rafi to run screaming in the other direction, Isaac's demeanor-especially as interpreted through the audiobook narration-and sweet attitude actually balanced things out for me. But I still didn't quite feel a connection between the two characters, which made the story 3 stars for me.
As for the audiobook narration, I really liked Robert C. Clark's interpretation, it actually made Isaac's pursuit of Rafi more palatable than reading it in the e-book. The sarcasm and Rafi's frustration are quite clear in the audio, and the character voices are well done and consistent, making the narration 4 stars for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2014This is one of those adorable books that you come back to re-read over and over in time. Lawyer Rafi Steiner thought he had been bullied by Isaac in high school, but when they meet again as adults, professional basketball player Isaac wants to make things right between them because he had always actually liked Rafi. The couple is so cute together and I totally enjoyed this story. The quality of the writing makes it valuable. A keeper. Gotta love a sweet romance. *sigh...* I love this book because, like Isaac, we can all keep growing and become better people every day of our lives. This book reminds me of that.

Cute short story where classmates bump into each other as adults and realise their old memories may have been skewed as they reconnect and make new ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great 🥰
Sometimes you don't need a book with 300 pages to find the story sweet and great !
Sometimes you have two characters full of love, emotions and a little bit of craziness !
This is what Isaac and Rafi are for me !
Thank you so much for this great story!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enemies to Lovers
It's a super fast love story with racy erotica and good humour. Rafi is getting together with Isaac, his high school bully who turns out to be an NBA MVP. Isaac is the possessive, jealous type and is seen growling at rivals. The sexy scenes are pretty hot and it's a good read altogether. But I couldn't believe how quick Rafi was to forgive Isaac for his cruelty back in school. Few holes are there in the plot , but I enjoyed the story.
