- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2008Someone is luring and killing men in the safety of their homes, in the intimacy of their bedrooms. Someone is winning trust and then betraying it in the worst way possible and to Mac Nighthorse, that is obscene. He knows the lifestyle and understands the Total Power Exchange between Mistress and Slave and for someone to betray that beautiful and freely given gift while in his city drives him into action. He risks his Sergeant's moral reaction when he tells her his plan to catch the woman known as the S&M Killer, but he's willing to let himself out of the closet, so to speak. He's going to go undercover within the alluring club known as the Zone as a sexual submissive. His sergeant laughs, sure that someone of Mac's build and standing would never pass for a sub, but that's what he is. A sexually submissive male who craves the power of a Mistress's touch.
Mistress Violet is prowling the Zone when she sees Mac. His powerful build and self assured masculinity screams out to her. As do the submissive wrist cuffs he wears. She wants him. She's attracted to him, but she wants more than the body he so freely offers her. She wants what no woman, no mistress has ever been able to touch. She wants his soul. She wants to tear open his body and crawl right in and once she has him by the balls, figuratively and literally, she's never letting go.
Seriously, there are not enough words to express how much I love this book. I should say that the idea of femdom scares the bejesus out of me. I can't explain it but the idea of a woman breaking down a man just gives me the creeps. If I had a man strapped down to a rack, I wouldn't know what to do. But not Violet. She doesn't break Mac by just relentlessly lashing him, oh no. That would be too easy. She relentlessly breaks down all his emotional armor, past all the bullsh*it as she says and gets right to the man within, and it was seriously erotic as hell. Even though some of her methods had me squirming in discomfort, I was still absolutely one hundred percent fascinated. The relationship between Mac and Violet was so believable and so amazing that I closed this book with a sense of awe.
Don't be like me, scared off by the idea of femdom. It's true that Violet holds the reins but Mac is no lightweight. He's no lap dog or doormat, and as he so charmingly tells her, he's nobody's pony. He's the pit bull who runs his own yard and he's delicious. He views his forays into BDSM almost as a workout. An exercise regiment. He normally looks at each Mistress with narrowed eyes and basically tells her, "do your worst, I can take it." He's like a soldier caught behind enemy lines, facing torture, who is screaming that no one will break him. Until Violet.
Once Mac and Violet get past the power exchange their relationship really heats up. It was an incredible courtship and I adored it. Mac is just unbelievable. I am so in love with him. I don't care if he's a fictional character, I am in love. The level of their intimacy just blew me away and ye gods, I want that. You must read this book. Now.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2016I have read a number of Joey Hill's novels and tend to enjoy them as they are such well written erotica. This book is the story of "Mac" Mackenzie Nighthorse and Violet. Mac, a police detective, is the sexual submissive in the relationship while Violet, a highway patrol officer, is the dominant. The story is much more about how these two characters come to know and trust each other as opposed to finding the murderer of other sexual submissives. As with most of Joey Hill's books I've read, the writing is beautiful and gives a window into the world of dominance and submission without being preachy or too graphic. The idea that people should be allowed to love as they see fit regardless of what that means is up-front and very apparent.
I truly enjoyed much of the book, but I felt the end conflict where the murderer was unmasked felt rushed and I for one thought the murderer just seemed completely insane so I had a hard time believing the one who had done the killing could have really been so clear headed as to leave behind NO real evidence. Also the final chapter before the Epilogue had one event that had me shaking my head as I like Violet in the story could NOT believe such as thing would be allowed to happen in a hospital with a wounded officer in it. Still, all in all the story is well worth the time, the characters well written and the cover is HOT, HOT, HOT.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2013I really didn't know what to expect, delving into this book. I knew nothing at all about the BDSM lifestyle and I didn't and do not have that proclivity. The first part of the book truly was shocking to me and eye opening, that there were intelligent, CARING people who would follow this type of practice willingly, and not have its origin based in self hate, negativity and depravity, but rather for trying to reach out, to break down walls and be CLOSER to another person.. Well, who knew? I consider myself open minded and also one with a determinedly objective viewpoint. So it was extremely interesting to me to watch the unpeeling of the layers of obstacles and distance in these two characters as they made their way into the close and intimate reaches of their reciprocal physical and emotional aspects and into a deep and meaningful - and LOVING - relationship with each other.
I thought the story and character development was truly masterful and very finely crafted. It kept me breathless and enthralled, especially once the barriers were down between the protagonists and the more loving aspects came to the forefront.
The thriller part of the story was also extremely well done and handled with sensitivity although also with plenty of angst. Although this book is raw and blunt, it is also deep and moving. I'm glad I was influenced by a couple of the other reviewers and purchased it. It is an impressive work and for sure not just a titillation for the senses. I found the BDSM scenes distasteful, but they worked in the context of the story and I understood the characters through this intense part of the book. Although this might be too intense for some, and possibly not raunchy enough for others who mostly picked up the book for the sexual aspects (I don't know), I thought overall it was excellent and a very worthwhile, surprising read. RECOMMENDED.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings
I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, especially during the first half, it was mind-blowing. I loved the main characters; I think they were extremely well written. They were interesting and intelligent. The male lead, Mac, was traumatized by the things he’d seen in the line of duty, which made it difficult for him to relinquish control even though he craved for a woman to dominate him. He was a hot mess, and I’m a total sucker for his kind of hero, especially when thrown together with a determined heroine like Violet who knew how to push his buttons. The BDSM scenes were unbelievably steamy. I’ve read them over and over again and they still get my heartrate up.
But there were also several aspects that bummed me out. First of all, head hopping. Occasionally the point of view within a chapter switched from character A to character B and back to character A for no proper reason. It really pulls me out of the story when the point of view doesn’t stay consistent. Second of all, during the second half, the amazing sexual tension between Violet and Mac fizzled out. I feel as if their conflict got resolved too soon, after which there wasn’t much to stick around for. Then there was the murder mystery. Sigh. I was disappointed by the big reveal because I’d been thinking “Surely X is not the murderer, it’d be such an offensive cliché.” And then X turned out to be the murderer and I rolled my eyes. Also, I loved X and wanted them to be the good guy, so the ending just kind of put me in a foul mood.
So overall a mixed bag. The first half was amazing despite the head hopping; the second half not so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good plot
An erotic story with a real plot. Even if you remover all the sex from this book you still have a really good story

5.0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
Damn good story. Gives an unusual look into the world of BDSM through both a sub and Mistress' view point. Couple of nice little twists to the story also. Well written and an absolute pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars naturally Great
Natural Law
By Joey.W.Hill
5/5
First thing that attracted me to this book was the cover, I just had to know what the story was, then after reading the synopsis I was even more intrigued.
This book has a lot packed into it, male submissive in the BDSM scene which most people totally get wrong, added to that is the attraction between 6ft plus Mac and 5ft something Violet that is way more than just D/S .
On top of all this there is a serial killer on the loose, going around killing submissive men.
I loved way the characters grew as I read , the sparks between Violet and Mac came practically off the page, I totally loved the way Mac's Sub instincts clashed at times with his natural Alpha male side , and how Violet could see through all his tricks.
As for the serial killer part of the story I got it wrong not just once but twice, I honestly did not see it coming , on hindsight I think I must have missed a clue somewhere.
The way all this is woven together is fantastic, I could not put it down.
Joey did a great job of showing BDSM is not kinky sex, sex is just the same as everything else in life it's a spectrum, and it all depends where each persons preference fall as to where they are on the spectrum, I think the very first exponents of BDSM were cave people who dragged each other by the hair .
This is a great story of how love can break down your barriers and walls , and if you find the right person everything clicks into place, it's also a really good mystery keeps you guessing.
This book is now one of my Favs

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read
It was a good read, but I feel as though it needed a bit more grit. All in all, I'm happy I bought it.
