Barbara Cartland was the world's most prolific novelist who wrote an amazing 723 books in her lifetime, of which no less than 644 were romantic novels with worldwide sales of over 1 billion copies and her books were translated into 36 different languages.

As well as romantic novels, she wrote historical biographies, 6 autobiographies, theatrical plays and books of advice on life, love, vitamins and cookery.

She wrote her first book at the age of 21 and it was called Jigsaw. It became an immediate bestseller and sold 100,000 copies in hardback in England and all over Europe in translation.

Between the ages of 77 and 97 she increased her output and wrote an incredible 400 romances as the demand for her romances was so strong all over the world.

She wrote her last book at the age of 97 and it was entitled perhaps prophetically The Way to Heaven.

Her books have always been immensely popular in the United States where in 1976 her current books were at numbers 1 & 2 in the B. Dalton bestsellers list, a feat never achieved before or since by any author.

Barbara Cartland became a legend in her own lifetime and will be best remembered for her wonderful romantic novels so loved by her millions of readers throughout the world, who have always collected her books to read again and again, especially when they feel miserable or depressed.

Her books will always be treasured for their moral message, her pure and innocent heroines, her handsome and dashing heroes, her blissful happy endings and above all for her belief that the power of love is more important than anything else in everyone's life.

I am a fan of Barbara Cartland. I have read a lot of her novels. Many of them have a similar plot with one or two twists that I enjoy to find, and see where those twists go.
But this one is almost a torture to follow: bad editing, excessive and repetitive dialogue, a villain that is almost a ghost all along the 10 (ten!) chapters, a heroine that goes from fear to strength to silliness never defining herself, as a crazy corkscrew. Also persons that appear and disappear whithout a further explanation.
Finally, a convoluted plot that doesn't deserve to be defined 'plot'.
So… Who wrote this novel? I can't believe was our beloved Barbara Cartland.

This is only the second ever I was not crazy about Barbara Cartland's book. I have read about 250 of them, but this one was very repetitive. So many times the same dialog between the two main characters.

This one is so repetitive with so little plot skip this one there are so many others. Lots of typing errors too
  • Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2024
Unfortunately, I have to agree with other reviewers. There was so much repetition and so many typos that it was not enjoyable at all to read this book. The book would only have had about 50 pages if you deleted the continuous repetition.

Having read and collected Barbara Cartland books for many years, I understand the basic formula she used and expected each story to progress smoothly and simply using her research to enhance her writing. I also know this pink series has been published from manuscripts published after her death, so I was pleasantly surprised when the beginning of the series kept the flavor and nuances of her earlier romances.

Love Under the Stars is an embarrassment to the author's memory. It does not follow her style, flow or detailed research for geographic or historical accuracy, let alone the apalling editorial mistakes throughout the book. The author's books were entertaining, light and refreshingly positive, but this one fails on all accounts. Editors/family/heirs - if the manuscripts and not Barbara left unfinished cannot be completed in books that meet the standard she set, it's time to end the series.

I have read and enjoyed many books by Barbara Cartland. In general she writes light, entertaining stories. This one is not worth reading. The dialog is extremely repetitive and the story rambles as if someone just took her notes for a book and published then as the finished product.

Very often repitive and the plot was flimsy with no real story line. The dialogue between the hero and heroine is often repeated and nothing new or original in it

I found this to be too repetitive and too gushy, even for the great Barbara Cartland. Skipped through a lot of the book.
