Of Potions and Portents, Sister Witches of Raven Falls Cozy Mystery Series, Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,378 ratings

First book in a completed series of four stories from USA Today bestselling author Nyx Halliwell featuring humorous mysteries with witches, talking animals, shifters, ghosts, and fun!

★★★★★ “…mystical, magical, and a joy to read from start to finish.” ~ So Many Reads

When a healthy young couple die without obvious cause except for my magick potion, the new police chief sets his sights on me. I don't have an explanation for what happened to the couple, I do have a great many insights into the chief. Can I uncover the real killer before he arrests me for murder?

I’ll be honest—I long for love and a “normal” social life, just like everyone else. Finding the time—not to mention the right guy—however, is a lost cause. My days are spent cooking up products for the Lotions, Potions, and Herbs line for Conjure, the metaphysical shop I run with my sisters, and my specialty love potion blend is helping everyone else in Raven Falls find romance, while I’m working my broomstick off preparing for the upcoming Beltane celebration.

That is until Tristan McGregor, the sexy chief of police, threatens to shut down my kitchen and accuses me of murder. Two people have died, entangled in—ahem—a compromising position, and covered in my love potion. On top of that, I discover an unsettling portent about the chief in his tea leaves, and when he steals a kiss after catching me at the crime scene, I try to convince myself it's only because he’s under the influence of the love potion enchantment.

But is he? With my cursed mockingbird familiar, Hoax, my sassy sister witches, and a whole lot of peppermint tea, I have to solve the mystery before Tristan puts me behind bars. Even so, as the fires of Beltane nip at my heels, introducing the chief to the world of magick could send my chances at love up in smoke.

I love cozy mysteries, and when I found out that one of my favorite others is now branching out into writing cozy mysteries I couldn’t wait to see what she would write. Of Potions and Portents is the first book in Nyx Halliwell’s new Sister Witches of Raven Falls Cozy Mystery Series. I have to admit I was confused at first because it is not my typical cozy read with just small-town people that stumble across some type of mystery. In Of Potions and Portents, it is a small town; however, the characters are all witches with familiars or have some type of supernatural power. For some reason when I was asked to read this novel, I missed that the main characters are witches; don’t ask me how I could miss that because of the series title, but I did. I also didn’t realize that there is a subtype genre within cozy mysteries that is witch based because one never crossed my path until now. Once I wrapped my mind around that, I was pulled into the story and couldn’t put it down.

Ms. Halliwell’s Whitethorne sisters, named after each of the seasons, are absolutely delightful. This first story centers around Spring Whitethhorne who creates lotions and potions for Conjure, the shop she shares with her sisters. Imagine what happens when one of her lotions is discovered at the scene of a crime and when Tristan, the sexy new chief of police wants to shut her down and arrest her for the crime. In this series, there is magic and a little bit of romance which adds a little spice to the story. The descriptions and details made me feel that I was right there in the gardens with Spring or in the little shop. Also, the dialogue between the characters kept it faced pace and a quick read.

Right now, there are three other books scheduled for this series which features each of the sisters. Each sister is talented and brings a special ability which helps when dealing with the paranormal forces they face. I can’t wait to find out more about Spring’s sisters and look forward to the next book in the series.

If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining read, this book is for you. Congratulations Ms. Halliwell on the beginnings of not only a new series but genre as well.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review that is my own.

I enjoyed this! The magic rules/world are laid out in an interesting way which really pulled me in. It introduces all the characters nicely and has established relationships/feelings there so you don't need to start with the characters meeting each other. etc. It is well written with a nice use of language and really paints a picture of the story, location, world. You want to keep reading it. It was only after I was out of its spell that I noticed that the main relationship needs a lot more interactions between the characters to really develop a strong relationship. Dreams and working together on a mystery is not quite enough for the long term but perhaps in the next book they work on getting to know each other better while we focus on another sister. Also, the resolution of the mystery still leaves a lot of questions which may be answered in a later book. So some aspects where glossed over quickly but still a great read. I will try the next one.

Oh, oh, oh. What a great start to a new series, and a new alter ego. This alter ego was as great as the other in writing department. Yes, there are tons of witches book out there, in cosy mystery genre. Some of them were quite similar that I don’t bother to read. This one, however, was different. It’s still filled with witches, their familiars, and still cosy mystery. The witches though, it’s closer to what old perception of witches was. And they’re completely different from us general human. So, while it’s closer to classic witch description (albeit beautiful ones), it was not sinister. It shone lights that it’s all actually in good nature.

Oh, and expect a bit suspense as well. As Nyx’s other ego was RS author, it carried over a tiny bit here. And it only made it better.

So this is labeled as a cozy myster story, except the focus is more on how to be a witch instead. Felt like there was more in-depth explanation for what the witches do rather then the mystery, and it took a while to get into the actual magic bit of things, and I felt like it took forever to get to the slinging magic part. I definitely felt like the pacing was just off. That said, once it got to the magic part, the story raced quickly to its ending with little exploration of what things mean and developing the world they live in.

Overall, the conflict with the magical beings, their mother, Tristan and the others should have been explored more in-depth to round things out and get a meatier story, but the basics made for a decent quick read.

This is a new to me series and I'm loving this book! This book is an introduction to the Whitethorne sisters who are natural witches. This book follows spring and explores her story, her gifts, hopes and fears. I really enjoyed the strong sisterly bond and their individual specialities. The element of romance is also a lovely part of this story. I am looking forward to the next book.

What a brilliant first in a series for Nyx Halliwell.

The Whitethorn Sister's are all amazing. Of Potions and portents was focused on Spring the youngest of the four White Thorne sister's. As a character, I love Spring she has such a peaceful, calming energy to her, but she can be strong and fierce when she needs to be especially when her family is threatened. I love Spring's way with nature, her love of food from growing to baking and her familiar Hoax is freaking adorable.
Now let's talk about sexy, handsome, charismatic, really stubborn Tristan Macgregor hmmm he is one hell of a police chief and one hell of a perfect match for Spring if they can both ever get their act together...lol
I love the setting the town of Raven Falls is described so lovingly I instantly fell in love and wanted to move there, to me that's a huge sign this is going to become a favorite series as it builds.

So basically if you love cozy paranormal mystery with a sweet dash of romance, awesome characters and a wonderfully delightful town you'll love these books as much as I did.

There’s a lot of action crammed into this book. Witches and magic of course, but add in a mysterious double death, an evil demon on the loose, a romance or two,
And you have a recipe for an entertaining read.

If you like your cozys a little on the darker side then this is for you, it's definitely not the run If the mill cozy that seems to be the norm these days. It's difficult to say a lot without spoilers suffice to say four sisters all witches with various powers strive to keep their community happy healthy and prosperous while holding at bay all the dark side of magic including the demons. Lots of action and murders twists and turns you won't see coming and a little slow-burn romance liberally sprinkled with humor both light and dark, I can highly recommend this book, to be honest, I couldn't put it down I read it in one sitting, read and enjoy, Baz
