- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2019Carissa is in tbe way to Hy Brasil to ask the Tuatha de Danaan for help against the invading Unseelie. But the Tuatha de Danaan have always refused before ti get involved.
Boarding a magical ship she has more travelling companions than she planned. Along with her fiance, human Cameron Locke is Sall, the Rhys Dwfen servant of Fen & his pregnant wife Hela who is the Chief Elf's daughterbut changeling Tabitha & her Crimble husband, Otto. Of course Chaos, the nature fairy ix with Clarissa. However Hiya & Cyn have also managed to sneak onboard. Last but definitely not least is the formidable Tuatha de Danaan Raven who suspects a spy is on board.
It's far from smooth sailing as the inhabitants of Moss Hill struggle go solve more than one death on the way to the land of the Tuatha de Danaan.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2019The stories have a great overarching premise based in folklore and myth. And the prose draws you into the story.. with only a few rushed spots where you are left wondering what is going on unable to follow the author’s descriptions. But overall that part is great.
This volume though tends to further distance the reader from the heroine Carissa. There is a difference between revealing a character’s flaws to readers, and making the character outright exasperating and eye-rolling. Even though, there are moments when Carissa reflects on self-doubts, she comes across as annoying and arrogant in this volume. Hardly likeable as she is in the previous volumes. The author is writing as though she is angry/frustrated with life and venting in her script.
Not to mention the match between Carissa and Cameron is not a very good one. In fact it is such a poor balance that it seems forced and completely unrealistic. Natural male pride would end that relationship quickly, since she constantly is in the role of protecting him. Not one man in a million would last in a relationship like that. He seems more like her pet then her companion and the whole time you feel sorry for him rather than see him as a 3-D character. Hela is wonderful for a side character. So is Raven. The nature fairies are necessary but too distracting to the script that they draw the reader out of the book rather than keeping the reader engrossed in the story. I found myself putting this book down more times than I normally would for a book.
The introduction of homosexuality into the story seemed politically forced. And the Tuathans were flat as opposed to the other nations of people in the series. The Tuathan people were a robust and hearty people as described in the stories of Lamfada and Nuada, and even though a writer doesn’t necessarily need to stay consistent with myth, they could have had an overall further depth to them as a whole. Raven is the exception. She is a wonderfully done character.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2020In this installment of the Faerie Apothecary Mystery Series, we get to see a little more into the world of magic beyond Moss Hill. There are so many great supporting characters in this book, I'd love to read more about their adventures as well. This book was a quick read and I ended excited to read future adventures.
