What do you say to you about yourself? When I was first introduced to affirmations I thought it was bullshit. It was near the end of my first year of college and I was struggling. My dad had passed away just a few months earlier and the anxiety that haunted me for years felt more powerful than ever. I felt like I had no control of my life so I decided to see a counselor. This would turn out to be one of the best decisions I made in college (besides, of course, the time my roommates and I brought all our mattresses out to the living room and played Xbox for a week straight). After a few sessions with my counselor, she suggested I find a self-help book to read in my spare time. I cringed.First off, I barely read the books that were assigned in my classes. Secondly, self-help books sounded cheesy as hell. But she was convincing and had my trust, so I gave it a shot. There was a book on Amazon I found that specialized in helping with anxiety and seemed right up my alley. I finished the book in one day. It was liberating to learn about the mind, relieving to hear that I wasn’t the only one who felt crazy, and inspiring to read the stories of others who had overcome their inner turmoils. But there was one chapter that made my eyes roll instantly and I skimmed through quickly: Affirmations. It wasn’t until a few years later that I realized my own hypocrisy. I read somewhere that the average person has around 60,000 thoughts per day and 95% of those thoughts were repetitive.Whoa.Whether I called them “affirmations” or not, there were certain thoughts that had been circulating my mind and reinforcing my belief system for years. Thoughts like, “I’m so shy and awkward” or “Everyone else has it all figured out, there must be something wrong with me” or my go-to whenever I felt uncomfortable “shitshitshitshitshitshit”.I realized that no matter what, I was going to have thousands of thoughts going through my mind each day and I got to choose which ones I listened to, repeated, and believed in. Some make me feel like shit and some make me feel content. so I might as well choose the latter. This journal isn’t about the research or effectiveness of affirmations; there are plenty of books, articles, and videos out there already for that. This journal is about you. It’s designed to help you build the bridge that takes you from where you are to where you want to be. To do so, you must be specific about what the best version of yourself looks like so that you know which thoughts about yourself you must lock in on.It all starts with how you speak to you about yourself. With this journal you’ll be writing down who you want to become (in the present tense) every day.
