- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025This is a must read for voiceover artists!! Knowledge is power!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2022Josh Alexander covers all the details. I've been "starting" my business for over a year and he provides a tremendous amount of useful information.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2021Josh is great with sharing his knowledge of the VO business in this book and on his YouTube channel (subscribe if you haven’t). Good Luck!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2021I am afraid Josh Alexander won’t be happy with this review. While reading, it didn’t take long to figure out that he has made a big mistake.
If you are a subscriber to Josh’s blog you have come to expect a certain amount of his off-the-wall humor. If you are looking for that here, you might be a little disappointed. That is fine; this is just a different type of book. There is humor, of course. I don’t think Josh can write for very long without some humor slipping in, but it will be harder to find.
What you will find is a condensation of the tools, tactics, techniques and other words that start with “T” that he has used to become successful. This is where the obvious mistake happens. The curtain has been pulled aside and the fraud has been exposed. Put bluntly, he is pretending to be an authority on the business side of voice-over when that premise is patently nonsense.
I mean, how smart of a business person can he be if he hands the Keys to the Kingdom to his potential competitors? He is essentially telling his readers that if you want to compete with him, these are the steps you need to take. How is that good business?
How can a new voice artist trust business advice from someone who tells them how he got to where he is, what pitfalls to watch out for, and which steps you must not skip? Has he never heard of Colonel Sanders and the Eleven Secret Herbs and Spices? Everyone knows that when you have a formula for success, you don’t offer it to the world, knowing that it can be used to compete against you.
Even worse is putting all of this useful info into a form compact enough to keep on hand and reference easily. What he has done is provide the secret recipe and then made it microwavable. What is he thinking? Not exactly evidence of a business mind that you should emulate.
The only absolutely, totally not self-serving in any way wisdom I can offer is to not trust advice from such a person. In fact, what a savvy person would do is not buy this book and tell all your friends not to either.
Now excuse me while I go back to reading, taking notes and planning my domination of the voice-over world while you go back to not knowing how to compete with Josh. Or me.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2021"Adventure? Excitement? A jedi seeks not these things" is a quote that most people know from Star Wars when Yoda is instructing Luke. According to his own words, Yoda has been around for over 900 years! Which would then imply that he has seen his fair share of battles, his fair share of peace, as well as his fair share of victory and defeat. I would dare say Yoda is a subject matter expert in terms of the Force.
But I'm not here to talk about science fiction. I'm here to talk about the real world. And within that real world are people like you and me who are trying to find or have found their niche. For a select few, that niche is being a Voice Actor.
Plain and simple: Joshua Alexander is my Yoda. Granted, he is NOT over 900 years old, but he has been in the realm of Voiceovers for a long time. Without a doubt he IS a subject matter expert. This is his field in which he thrives, succeeds, and plays in.
If I were to want to learn how to bake British pastries, I would buy a book from Paul Hollywood or Mary Berry. Cakes, pies, cookies, biscuits, etc. They would all be pristine, precise, and perfect recipes down to the very letter!
Likewise, if I want to be a better voiceover artist AND a businessman in that field, then it stands to reason that I need to buy books from Joshua Alexander.
If you want to start in Voiceovers, or if you need help in your existing career in Voiceovers, or if you are ready to turn you voiceover hobby into a full-time business...then this book is for you.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2021You know those times right? Where the audience is in shock...then one person starts a slow clap...the camera zooms in and their jaw is dropped in amazement, and then they start to zoom back and everyone else also has their jaw dropped and starts clapping...turning the room into a roaring applause with whistles and shouts! That's how I feel about this book!
This book has loads of amazing advice...and as much as I love Josh (the author) he doesn't make the book all about him! I mean, I don't think there was a single chapter where he didn't reference another amazing person, service, product, website, quote etc. He keeps it real and gives you his personal tips through his own experience. Helps you if your just starting out to get some good starting equipment that will set you up for success without completely breaking the bank. And he even sneaks in a little bit of his humor here and there so that you don't get too stuck in "serious" mode. This is a great read to keep in your collection and go back through it from time to time for helpful reminders to keep your foundations solid! Now stop reading reviews and get the book already! It's worth it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2021THIS is the book every budding and established voice artist should have within arms reach for quick reference. Its straight forward, cut-to-the-chase material lays out step by step PRECISELY how Josh has managed to amass financial success in a very crowded and competitive field.
Seriously, it’s like discovering the secret of how to solve a Rubik’s cube. Joshua opens his tool box of templates, websites and countless other resources.
The only negative I could find about this book would be the omission of any reference to Michael Bolton.
Basically, “Running A Successful Voiceover Business” is the culmination of Josh’s years of experience, run through a juicer, compressed through a colander and poured into one satisfying super smoothie of success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, simple, and chock full of tips
Like his other books, Joshua gives freely from his experiences and journey to being a successful voiceover artist and actor. In this business book he describes many of his techniques and systems he's used. He encourages, instructs, and entertains you while NOT getting bogged down in too many details. After reading this I have a good roadmap with enough specifics to get me moving, and enough flexibility to make it my own.
