Voiceovers: A Super Responsibility: Exploring The Incredible Responsibilities & Privileges Of Being A Trusted Storyteller (The Super Voiceover Artist Book Series 3) Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

In this heartfelt conclusion to the Super Voiceover Artist Book Series trilogy, noted voiceover artist, author and blogger Joshua Alexander drives the point home: voiceovers are a super responsibility. They're not just for anyone, and they carry with them a massive onus of gravity, knowing that each script demands our very best. Digging deep into examples of celebrity, stories of vulnerability, and challenging the reader to go understand their calling, "VOICEOVERS: A Super Responsibility" is a fitting end to Joshua's "Super Voiceover Artist Book Series."

Joshua Alexander runs the It's The Voices In My Head Blog at www.itsthevoicesinmyhead.com, and maintains the Global Voiceover Artists Network on Facebook at www.gvoa.net. He is a voice talent, trainer, encourager, blogger, author, and consultant, and takes great pride in his responsibilities in voiceovers. Booking an average of 15-20 jobs a week, he pursues voiceovers tenaciously, and has proven himself as a voiceover superstar and a force for good in the VO world.

I just finished reading the latest book from Joshua Alexander, “Voiceovers: A Super Responsibility: Exploring the Incredible Responsibilities & Privileges of Being a Trusted Storyteller”, the third of the three books collectively referred to as The Super Voiceover Artist Book Series.

It needs to be said that to read a Josh Alexander book is to choose to allow the author to take you on an, shall we say, unconventional journey. Well, to be honest, it is more of a Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride kind of scenario with unexpected twists, turns and just simple… oddities.

Let me back up. Maybe I should start with what this book isn’t. This is not an instruction manual. It isn’t a how-to-get-from-zero-to-a-million-dollars-in-a-year kind of sales pitch. It isn’t offering advice on how to build a professional studio for under $100 or telling you what microphone to buy. So, what is it?

If Josh has super powers, or at least a super suit, then I think he is at his best when he wears the cape of encouragement. To me, this book is all about encouragement. Encouragement to not give up hope, to take the time to enjoy the journey and to give ourselves grace for our human failings along the way.

There is also encouragement to take our role as voice talent seriously, to take responsibility for how and what we promote, and to go beyond just reading scripts to an awareness of the responsibility we bear for our clients to always give our best.

In typical Joshua Alexander fashion, he does give helpful advice and professional tips, like how to avoid being a hokey-pokey voice talent, how to assemble a gazebo in the rain without reading the instructions, and for more advanced readers, how to become one of those flailing inflatable tube men. I’ve always thought those guys look so tranquil and fun. I can’t wait to get my career to that level… but come to think of it, I might have misunderstood his point on that one. I am easily distracted with bright colors and movement.

Other things you will find in no other voice-over book include:
    Apes reading philosophy
How to know if you deserve to fail
    Dopamine addiction
    Multiple threats of hammer killings
    The many wonders of Shift-F7
And encouragement to dunk your clients

Did I mention this is an unconventional journey? Josh always deploys his off-kilter sense of humor and personal vulnerability to tell stories with a purpose. The sum of which is that you get entertained at the same time you have an opportunity to learn a thing or two. “Edutainment” as Josh calls it. It may be a wild ride, but have no fear. It is worth the price of admission.

Let me begin with a stern warning. You are holding Josh Alexander’s third book. That makes him a triple threat. Chapter 40 starts with a telling disclaimer from the author. He confesses: ‘I employ satire. As such, fun is often poked, and exaggerations are often employed.’

If you don’t like fun, and you think exaggerations are over the top, give this book to a more deserving soul. It will enlighten and brighten his or her day. Why, you may ask?

Aided by a plethora of pop-culture and fast-food references, Josh not only takes you inside his voice over booth, but inside his voice over brain. And boy, there’s a lot going on in that brain!

“Fun-sized” Joshua (his words, not mine) is quite the edutainer. You learn while you laugh, and you laugh while you learn. To me, there is no better or healthier combination.

Being an author myself, I know this is a risky strategy. If people don’t like your sense of humor, you’re screwed. However, since this is the last book in a trilogy, I think you know what you’re getting yourself into. A delicious smorgasbord of colorful anecdotes, astute observations, and invaluable insights, all coming straight from the heart.

Like Frodo in The Lord of the Rings, you are once again embarking on an epic journey, an Odyssey perhaps (Josh’s favorite minivan).

My only disappointment is, that this is the last book in a series of three. We all desperately need more Josh in our life.

There’s no one who does you quite like you, Mr. Alexander!

You'd think this book would be all about Voiceover...there IS, don't worry...you've come to the right place! But really what you're about to receive is a massive amount of LOVE!
Joshua Alexander continues his affectionate embrace of not only voiceover, but for life and business as well. (Don’t be surprised if the fragrance of chocolates and roses waft through the air as you read!)
Each chapter brings you closer to understanding just how Joshua manages to achieve his "Super Hero" status and the realization of perhaps those goals are attainable for...you. That's Josh's goal anyway!
It's a perfect gift for those who enjoy large doses of fun while being inspired to achieve goals too!

In the third book of his trilogy, Joshua Alexander's writing delves into various personal experiences, life lessons, and business experiences that have helped mold his voiceover career. Of note, while many stories in this book uphold Joshua's brand of light-hearted and often humorous anecdotes and observations, the book also spends time focusing on some of the hardships and struggles he experienced on his journey to creating a thriving voiceover business. Amusing and comical insights are contrasted with moments of sober self-reflection and vulnerability, offering a more human and sincere picture of who is beneath the cape.

Joshua writes a very fun story about the struggles on the journey of succeeding in the voiceover industry with great references to life events and movies. It’s a great read, entertaining, fast-paced and encouraging. He does, however, throughout the book, show just how much on-going work goes into being a successful voiceover talent. Great lessons noted so pay attention and, take note, keep this book on your bookshelf.

Once again Josh Alexander uses charm, wit, and his uniquely stream-of-consciousness storytelling style to bring valuable insights to his audience. Voiceovers: A Super Responsibility is essential reading for anyone interested in making a living on-mic.
