JP also has a tremendous podcast along with other resources to help support the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024This book goes beyond theory, providing coaches with a clear framework and actionable steps to build, implement, and sustain a strong team culture. It’s practical, insightful, and a must-read for anyone looking to create meaningful change in their program.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2022While the author is primarily interested in sports development this is a book that speaks to human relationships in every setting. Any person in a leadership or management role would find this a well thought out approach to setting a climate and goals for effectively leading a "team" in any setting.
The author does an excellent presentation on the philosophical underpinnings of the methodology of transformational coaching (leadership). From there he sets out solid principals and techniques for making it a reality.
I read it on Kindle but recommend the print copy for easier access to the pre chapter outline and the post chapter take-aways and suggestion for implementation. The examples and words of coaches, players, sports psychologists and others make it a very engaging and interesting read.
The author presents transformational as an exciting way to develop character and whole person development through sports. He shines a light on a way to respect the dignity of each individual player and coach in a way that sports actually can "transform" and enrich individual lives and the broader culture of athletics and beyond.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2025This is my single best-recommended book for a coach, hands-down. It's leveling up our team culture. I'm in my second decade as a coach and I wish I found this year one.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2022The Culture System by JP Nerbun is an outstanding book that every coach and person in a leadership position should read if they are committed to creating a culture where everyone puts the team before themselves.
This book will help you create an environment where your players will feel empowered and take ownership in the team. This book will help you develop a player led team which is much stronger than a coach led team. JP will give you the tools you need to make this happen and share with you examples and stories of how this system has impacted so many teams in so many great ways.
I have made this book a required read for my staff so we can continue to implement it throughout our program.
I think JP hit a GRAND SLAM with this book and it is a must read for anyone in a leadership position.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2023If you are a coach or leader of any kind, this book is for you. I love the way the author goes into detail about how to build your team culture. A lot of books I have read never really gives you ideas on how to do it. This book breaks down different ways to help build your teams culture. My favorite line is when the author says to look at yourself as a mentor first, not a coach. This book gives so many useful tips. I highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2025I've read and re read this book several times over. To the point that my personal copy is quite worn out. It lays out everything you need as a coach to build a strong program with real life examples and thoughts from coaches actually doing it. I've followed JP's stuff for a few years and it has helped me significantly as a coach.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2023I own a semi-professional soccer team. I like to learn and want to help our team win and do things the right way. I read this entire 300 page book and on my Kindle was highlighting many parts per chapter and then taking photos to share with my coaching staff. We are beginning to implement individual player development plans, more or less, as outlined in this book. It's our first time doing it but we are optimistic it seems like a good idea. Cool book and a good read lots of positive ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars An impactful book on Culture systems - a must read!!
This is an impactful book on Culture systems. Which gives you a systematic approach, by offering a variety of tools and methods that enables you to establish a culture, then supports you and help you to enforce it within your coaching/leadership practice.
The best practical book on culture I have read. JP has written this in such a way that all coaches at any level can implement and understand the Culture systems and strategies.

5.0 out of 5 stars an amazing book. It’s really opened my eyes to a different way to think about teams and culture
A great little book about Culture. I’m going to use it both for my basketball coaching, but also in my workplace.
It leads you in to each chapter with great examples of transformational culture from the world of sports, leading you into foundational knowledge for a particular aspect of culture. It also includes further links and information to help take your own education to the next level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Create the culture that transforms the student athletes you get to work with.
For the last six years, I have not known a single person more dedicated to their craft and mission than J.P. Nerbun. After a career in coaching himself, J.P. experienced a "shift" in his mindset and recognized his purpose in coaching was to give instead of get. He has taken the last six years of his life to research, trial, fail, analyze and improve systems that he can give to us as coaches, to not only help us make the "shift" we need to an Outward Mindset, but to also create the culture that transforms the student athletes we get to work with. My hope is that you not only enjoy the book and the life changing stories of coaches just like you, but that you begin to see yourself as mentor and take the opportunity to implement some simple systems that will allow you even greater impact and transformation over the young men and women you have the privilege in coaching and leading."
