A Family Tradition Passed On

Abigail's family has traveled down to Fort Myers Beach for generations. Before she was born, her grandparents started traveling down every winter. Her father made sure the family growing up always made their way to Fort Myers Beach. Check out the last pages of the book to see some family photos over the years.

Abigail Griebelbauer is the author behind The Empower Empathy Early Series which currently includes D is for Darcy Not Dyslexia and A is for Anthony Not ADHD. Abigail is dyslexic, which inspired her to write her first children’s book based in part on her own school experiences. Abigail and Cecilia, the illustrator, plan on bringing awareness to other neurodiversity in their future books.

Abigail Griebelbauer graduated from the University of Evansville with a dual degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. During her time at the University of Evansville, she spoke on a panel about dyslexia. She gained a deeper knowledge through this experience and researching for a senior project on dyslexia, giving her a passion to be an advocate for individuals with dyslexia.

The story is a heartfelt one about a little girl (true story) named Abigail and she couldn't choose just one thing she loved about the beach. Although, she didn't tell the teacher all of the things she loved to do there, she knew she only had one choice. When it was her turn, she told her teacher spending time with her family was the best thing she loved to do over break. I especially enjoyed the real photos of her family live. This book is such an amazing book for all ages. It takes kids on a ride into their dreams of being at the beach, and is incredibly nostalgic for those who’ve shared the love for family vacations, specifically at Ft. Myers Beach, FL.
For me, the illustrations put to life so many of my own memories of being there as a kid, which made it so much fun and relatable to also read to my kindergarten class. They absolutely loved it and were engaged the whole time!
Lots was lost from Hurricane Ian, but long live the love for family, traditions, and memories made at Ft. Myers Beach! Thank you for sharing your sweet story, your experiences, and your memories of winter breaks with your family at the beach.

I read this book for an honest review. In this book you get to experience spending the winter holiday at the beach through the eyes of a child. The book is filled with colorful illustrations to go along with Abby's thoughts of what she could do on break. This is a wonderful book for any child's bookshelf.
