About the authors
Valentina Kay is an Italian-born editor, photographer, and writer.
A book devourer and an explorer of difficult and hard-to-reach places, her editing career began in 2006 when she started managing cult indie publisher Edizioni XII with her husband Daniele Bonfanti. Alongside, she pursued a career in healthcare, which deepened her understanding of the human condition—a theme richly woven into her writings.
At 42, a mother of three, she decided to surrender to her passion for storytelling full-time, leaving behind a secure position. After working as a marketing consultant for three years, she co-founded Bee Lab in 2023 with her usual sidekick Daniele. Bee Lab, a storytelling studio, handles the image and communication for companies in the renewable energy and new technologies sectors, as well as producing original works of experimental narrative.
Valentina has run ultratrails, navigated glaciers, climbed alpine walls, skied down steep slopes, and surfed Atlantic waves. She taps from these experiences to feed her narrative.
She resides in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, with her husband and daughters. "Urlan, Cosmic Cat" marked her feline leap into publishing her own work.
Daniele Bonfanti is an Italian-born writer, editor and translator, known for his contributions to speculative fiction and adventure.
He has translated giants such as Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Ramsey Campbell into Italian, as well as works from Italian and Spanish into English. His stories have been published alongside the greatest contemporary and classic authors, he has contributed to Stoker-nominated anthologies. He has received Honorable Mentions in Ellen Datlow's "The Best Horror of the Year," a Splatterpunk Award nomination, and has worked on several comics—authoring the graphic novel "Unstoppable," illustrated by Cardoselli, and "Urlan, Cosmic Cat," written with his wife Valentina Kay.
Before his English-language debut with "Game" in 2016, he had already published two novels, four anthologies as an editor, and a bunch of stories in Italy. Not even newsstands were spared: he wrote articles, essays, and columns on ancient mysteries, the paranormal, alchemy, and fringe science for magazines like Hera and Area di Confine.
With Valentina Kay, in 2023 he founded and runs Bee Lab, a storytelling studio.
A pianist and composer, he has also worked as a farmer and beekeeper—key experiences for his narrative.
A surfer, mountaineer, kayaker, trail runner and open-water swimmer, he resides in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, with his wife and daughters.
“If you are looking for vivid imagery and high-tension storytelling, Daniele Bonfanti is your man. He writes a clean line of prose that sings with energy, and his compelling tales stand hip-deep in bravado and confidence.”
—Thomas F. Monteleone, 5-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award
“A writer of amazing talent. A natural storyteller with the unique ability to make the unbelievable seem frighteningly real.”
— Owl Goingback, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Crota

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2024After having seen so much hilarious mess ups from AI generated entertainment, I was bracing myself to laugh at this comic. I have to say they did it right. The AI generated material had to be tweaked and edited to make sense. It's a good story with good artwork, Plus an explanation at the end describing what the artists did and some of the throwaway material that AI provided.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2024The authors admit that this was an experiment. They took an idea for a graphic novel and used AI to do the artwork, changing the story as panels were created. Did it work? Well, it's a (mostly) coherent story, thought it does not really have a point. The artwork (which the authors had to tweak in other software) is consistent. But given what it is - an experiment - it isn't bad.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2024I borrowed this thinking it is a graphic novel, and did not realize it was drawn by AI. The artwork of the final product was awesome. The narrative by the authors was interesting. I was fascinated by the AI interview . It would be easy to forget that the responses were coming from an artificial intellect, and not human responses.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2024Even though it's a short comic, I was well awake and SUPER IMPACTED on the storyline! That and the main hero is a humanoid black cat was a MAJOR big bonus for me to discover! Wanna see more Urlan now!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2024I hate to give anything less than a 5 star review. The two writers did put in an amazing month of effort creating this. However you do need to know that the CHaotic art styles (many), lack of coherent plot, character development or even consistent motivational point of view robbed me of the intrinsic joy I get from comic and anime art styles and stories.
I know this was a technological test and as such very impressive, however I do Not recommend this book to anyone except a programmer trying to understand chatgpt's limitations and abilities. They did manage to create something approaching art, but not an experience I can recommend.
I am very sorry to leave a negative review but after a day of thinking about it, I honestly want to warn those who are wandering.
If you do enjoy chaos in art and story then more power to you and I wish you joy. I also wish success to the writer/programmers as they grow in their adventures.
Blessings all but I do Not recommend this book.

P.s. the tie would have been a nice James Bond touch and we know that all cats take pride in their appearance so you could have chosen that over a ripped t shirt.

Urlan is a gun-for-hire, or a bounty hunter of sorts, who is traveling to the Triangle, a location in space known for making ships disappear. The Magnificat was one such shuttle, that somehow reappeared in the Triangle, and now it is his mission to find out exactly what happened to the crew of the ship. Armed to the teeth with weaponry and a cat attitude, Urlan makes the case for being the feline Doomguy.
What I appreciated the most as a reviewer is how the Team provided commentary into the AI being used, how it was used, and a brief discussion on the impact, and consequences. Although I'm still 50/50 on the whole idea and concept of such a program or system being utilized, I enjoyed this story. Even though it was a short read, the action didn't stop, and despite how little dialog there was, the environment of the story filled that vacuum, which made the character development interesting in a different way because we aren't seeing all of the internal thoughts materialized, but the action is moving the story along.
If you're a fan of Event Horizon, cats, or just cosmic space horror, I'd highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2024AI as a “narrative solution”: just because the mince is ground finer doesn’t mean it’s not laziness at one end and plagiarism at the other. At least the “authors” had the decency to admit it up front.

5.0 out of 5 stars A successfull experiment
"Urlan, Cosmic cat, published by Bee Lab, is an experiment that combines storytelling by Daniele Bonfanti and Valentina Kay with illustrations generated by the open AI Dall-E. The result is nothing short of extraordinary. The story is short but compelling, and the characters well characterised; the artificial intelligence-generated images, in a black and white sometimes splashed with colors, are superlative. There are cats, giant spaceships, heavy weapons and bizarre mutations... What more could you want?
All the attention devoted by the two authors to this experiment shines through in the comics - and I really appreciated that the experimental nature of this work is openly declared.
The 'making of' and the interview with the artificial intelligence are very interesting and entertaining.
This book is proof that artificial intelligence, if used professionally and with love for storytelling, can be a revolutionary artistic tool for writers, comic artists and illustrators...
PS: The weird flaming mini-cat deserves a story of its own...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great graphics. The writing could be a lot better.
It's a short graphics novel with a LOT of gaps in the story. For me the most interesting part is their journey with the AI in creating this piece.
I look forward to better works to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intrigante e ben realizzato

5.0 out of 5 stars The first glimpse into an exciting world
The story is short but packs a punch harder than you would expect in that number of pages. A new Universe is born and I'm looking forward to knowing more about it. It's sci-fi, with a touch of noir and the protagonist, a hard-boiled space cowboy (who happens to also be a cat) shows a fascinating, complex personality, not without some sense of humour.
I found the AI experiment interesting, particularly how the authors describe their process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative and captivating
"Urlan, Cosmic Cat" is a captivating fusion of storytelling and cutting-edge technology, offering a fresh perspective on the possibilities of AI in the realm of graphic narratives.
Additionally, the inclusion of the "making of" section and the interview with ChatGPT adds an extra layer of intrigue and insight into the creative process behind the comic.
Total gem!
