Does Audible or ACX run promotions on their own?

I’ve suddenly had an unbelievable and unexplained spike in audio book sales for the first book of a still growing Sci-Fi series. Does anyone know if Audible (or ACX) runs promotions without telling the author or producer?

I ask, because book #1 of five in a series, now two years old, went from 1 to 6 sales per day in the previous seven days, to 280 sales shown on ACX in the last two days (168 + 112). I didn’t advertise the audio book, although I’m running a slow producing NEW ad for the same eBook, with no paid clicks yet. This audio book sale increase can’t possibly be related to that new ad, with only 175 impressions in two days. However, it must be caused by some sort of promotion (free audio book giveaway or offered ultra-cheap?), but not by my own effort.

Not complaining, mind you, just confused. This could lead to full sales of the following books.

I've never heard of anything like that, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Maybe an experiment? The other possibility is that a blogger found it, liked it, reviewed it, and the person's fans are buying it. You might do a search and see if you can see a recent review or other activity.

Good point, but the blogger would have to have amazing influence to get that level of response. I promptly checked audible reviews, and Goodreads, and only the usual 1 per day for that book on Audible (out of 1276 older ratings). At 25 hours, new listeners haven't had time to hear the whole book, unless they don't sleep. :-) The book has sold well, with 7,448 (including the 280 in two days). It didn't sell that fast per day in the month it was first released. If it's some sort of give away, I wonder what my cut is?? 64% of nothing?

(I edited where it says 64% now. I'd said 60%, but it receives 14% above the original 50% paid in 2013.)

What ever was happening with Audible or ACX, after two days it ended. I sold only 3 of that book #1 yesterday, after the two barn burner days.

I haven't figured it out, but when my next ACX earnings statement comes, there had better be some explanation for those 280 apparent sales (and royalties). Apparently, no one else has had anything like this happen to their audio book sales. Strange doings.

Back to reality, (sigh)

ACX does occasionally advertise audio books. These are normally one day sale events. They've done several of mine. Normally they notify you before they do.

novalray,

Thanks, I hope that's what's happening for me, but I've had no notification from ACX.

The promotion, if that's what it is, is remarkably effective. Overnight, after a much slower than normal day yesterday (of only 3 sales), ACX shows that I sold 209 total audio books since yesterday, with 168 of them the same Book #1 of my series. They know that a spin-off audio book from that series is scheduled for completion and posting by April 15, and now might be a good time to attract readers to the six books already on audio. Good marketing, but not very good communications with me.

Did your one day sale event produce a large jump over your normal sales?

I've done well in just over two years with audio books (now at 28,665 total), but I never had sales this high on any new release for single days. I've hit nearly 100 in a first day for my later books, after building my fan base, but these are all new readers. I'd love it if I could request such promotions before a new book is released.

Over 28,000? Impressive, especially considering how limited our promotional options really are.

Yes. I sold over four hundred when they did one of mine. I've been on ACX for eighteen months and I've sold around 20,000 audio books. I have twelve different audio books out.

I wish we had an avenue to arrange such promotions with them. I wasn't even informed it would happen. There was another one, less dramatic, about a year ago, which also preceded by several weeks another new audio book for the series. I don't know how I could have helped enhance the promotion (since I've not seen a sample of what they do), but boosting it with a FB ad or via Amazon might have helped.

Thanks for the feed back.

I know what I forgot to ask you. Was the promotion a free give away, a regular price sale based on an emailed ad, or was it a reduced price sale? What happened to your royalties?

Correct

The book was discounted for the sale. However, there was an increase in sales afterward at the regular price.
