Hoping to get your attention as it doesnt appear you can send private messages.

I have your guide to publishing but I am struggling with some parts. I have created a title page, style sheet and a template all in one folder but where you say

'Open the template and paste the title page as trhe first item following the body tag' do you mean literally just paste the text in the title page on the line after <body> like this?

And then leave a space and insert the text from the TOC in the next line? Or do you somehow link to the file itself?

It would be good if I could speak to you as I feel I need a little help with certain parts of it as for a html newbie such as myself things always crop up as to which you are unsure of and cant always be understood by manuals.

I use a separate file for each of the book's elements, though I think you're using my Very Basic Template where there's only one file for the entire book. Here's the title page of my Guide:

Hi again Notjohn, I seem to have done something wrong during the steps.

I ran clean html, inserted all those little commands into my chapters and then pasted the writing into the template but when I click run in chrome or IE it just displays it as a load of html still and not a formatted page like your sample shows.

Also when I load it up as html doc its all askew and some chapters have completely different font and word size, plus chapter headings appear on the left not centre.

Any idea where I have gone wrong?

This whole business has really thrown me off and made me feel a bit down. I love writing and have a passion for storytelling, but I have become bogged down with this technical aspect that I simply struggle to fully understand. I really need personal guidance with it as helpful as the written guide is it does somewhat assume you understand certain elements, and im not even sure if anything I have created is right anymore as it looks a total mess when I open it up.

Need help :-(

Well, html is one thing, and *.doc is something else. Once you start working in html, you leave the sloppy universe of Word entirely.

If you are opening an html file in a web browser like Chrome, and you see html tags, then the likely cause is that your file doesn't begin with something like <html>

But you must edit html in a "text editor," like Notepad or better yet Note Tab or Notepad++. Not in Word or another word processor.

Another way to go, of course, is to hire it done. I would recommend Hitch at booknook dot biz, Charlie at ebookpioneers dot com, or David at liberwriter dot com. All three have posted here in the past, and all three have interesting things to say, Hitch especially.

Lol! I guess I'm too new on these forums to be on notjohns short list. Oh well.

I would recommend the following:

1) do not, and I mean DO NOT start editing the html code until you are ABSOLUTELY SURE that the text content is what you want it to be... unless you're comfortable editing text in the middle of a bunch of code markup - in which case have at it.

Once you leave Word, it's exactly as notjohn says: a whole new universe. If you try to go back, aside from having to clean up the code all over again, Word doesn't know what it's doing when it comes to reading html

2) I highly recommend Notepad++. It’s free, easy to use, and won't clutter your file with a bunch of crap you didn't add. DO "convert" to UTF-8, because it's a good idea for numerous reasons, but DO NOT "encode" in UTF-8, because it will replace half your punctuation with gobbldygook, and there's no way to fix it other than picking through the entire file.

3) LEARN how HTML and CSS work. It takes a little time, but it's better to know what you're doing.

Hi Carol...I would certainly go with what Michael says. Additionally, and for easier working , you might be able to resolve some of your formatting problems by reformatting your doc properly by just using Word.

But first some short explanations for some clarity. The reason your headings are a mess is probably because you haven't formatted or styled all the chapter headings and main headings properly in your toc using Heading 1 paragraph style in Word. When you format all your headings in Word you must style the Heading 1 paragraph style how you want it. This is easily done in Word using paragraph styles. If you don't do this then you will always get the default Heading 1 attribute values showing through in your html. In html, Heading 1 style always has pre-declared values and that's why you are getting strange formatting like align left, over-sized font, bold, incorrect space before and space after -- because all of these attributes are the pre-declared dominant defaults for the Heading 1 style in HTML. So all you have to do is just re-style the Heading 1 paragraph style in Word to your own preferences and this should solve many of your problems

So to change these annoying Heading 1 defaults and gain back some control you must open up the Heading 1 para style in Word and re-define or modify the attribute values that you want to control -- ie font size, text align, indent, space before text, space after text etc. If you do this I think many of your formatting problems will automatically be resolved.

For your TOC problems, I would just use the Bookmark/Hyperlink method to create your toc in Word. Here's how to do it:

*Create a blank TOC page in your doc and add Table of Contents at the top top of the page. Then write down and list all the chapters/main headers that you want in your TOC page.

*Now create a destination bookmark by highlighting each chapter or main heading throughout your book and, using the Insert tab->Bookmark menu item, add a short meaningful name for the bookmark ie pref, intro, chp1, chp2, chp3 etc. Additionally, for your toc page bookmark -- name it "toc" -- and for your start-read page bookmark -- name it as "start". Doing this automatically ensures that your toc page and start-read page locations will be as links in the Go To menu in Kindle after conversion.

*Just highlight each chapter or heading in your book that you want in yout TOC and add a named bookmark at that location.

*When you've bookmarked all your headings go back to your TOC page.

*For each heading in your TOC -- open Insert tab->Hyperlink and, in the right hand panel, select Place in Document..

*The destination bookmarks that you created previously will all be displayed in the pop up.

*Select the relevant bookmark name for each toc chapter or heading thereby creating hyperlinks and save it. Do this for ALL your headings and chapters on the TOC page.

That's more or less how to do it. And this manual TOC creation method will always show and work properly in Kindle.
