I have a Sci-Fi story of galactic empires in conflict. I want readers to visualize the Milky Way, where the various Arms are located, and the empires that I’ll display with respect to Earth. However, I’ve never inserted a graphic in an eBook, or one in CreateSpace.
How do you insert the image on the page you want (near the front for me)? How is the image given to Amazon, along with the Word document? Perhaps embedded in the document where you want it on the appropriate page, or as a file they insert where you ask (like a jpg or some such).
If I use a color image, is it automatically converted to gray scale for Kindles that only display black and white?
You can insert (not paste) it in Word and it will upload along with the text.
Don't use it as the first thing in the book, or it will be suppressed in favor of the cover. After the TOC or title page is good.
I use color whenever I have it, because it shows on the Fire tablets and in the various apps. It goes to grayscale for the e-ink Kindles.
As a follow up, the graphic map inserts worked out well. The color versions look great, the gray scale versions for non-color Kindles might need some different colors selected for map legends, for better contrast against the background, but that's easily done. Good tip NJ, thanks.
