No matter what I do, I get a camera with an exclamation point where I've included a picture. I've followed KDPs instructions to the letter. It's a JPG image in a Word document, and I save it as "Web page, filtered" and compress it into a zip file. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

So far, so good, but either you neglected to include the Word-created folder containing the images, or the pointers in the html are pointing to the wrong folder. Go back and try again, this time zipping together the html file and the image folder. It may help if you create a new folder in your computer containing only the Word doc, which you then save as html. When you go to zip the result, you should easily find both the html file and the image folder.

It's much easier simply to upload the Word doc (though that does have a potential problem) or to convert it to a mobi or an epub file. All three will carry the images with them, while an html file will not.

Good luck! -- NJ

The problem is definitely the HTML file part. Trying another file type. Will post an update when I get it to work. Thank you!

Yes, if you go the webpage, Filtered route, You have to upload the Html file AND THE Image file (That will have the same title as the HTML file.

When you use Word, and do the Webpage filtered stuff 2 files are created.

You have to stick both files into a folder and upload as a pair.

I forget if they need to be zipped. they Do need to be zipped if you email them to the Document service (The ....@free.Kindle.com service.)

I will use Calibre to make an old style MOBI file that works well.

Here is an OLD Link:

I am almost ready to give up with my eBook! I have uploaded the thing three times and every time, there is an issue somewhere. First time, totally my fault. I uploaded in .doc format and the images did not come out right. Second go around, I created a zipped HTML file with both the images and the content, still not showing up right. This last time, I followed the advice on the forum and converted it to an .epub. Still didn't work. What gets me about it is, every time I have uploaded the book and it is converted, the preview shows it as good, but then when I use the previewer it's screwed. I know it's not just the previewer, because I actually used the Kindle for PC to also check out the book, and all I get is big black boxes where the images go. I am not copying and pasting the images, but using the insert function in word. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I myself upload a Word.doc with jpeg's INSERTED (not copy and paste) and have never had any problem.
I don't do the HTML and zip stuff.
Check the size of your jpeg's as they may be to large.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure why I keep having issues. I reached out to suport to see if they could give me any insight unless it is what you mentioned about the jpegs being too large. Perhaps that's the issue. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. I have no idea. I've followed everything to the letter.

Sheena, you say it looks fine in the preview but not in Kindle-for-PC. Are you sure Kindle-for-PC isn't just showing you the original version? Certainly if you buy your own book, the bots will keep on giving you the original version even after you've uploaded a new version.
