Seeing as it's a quiet evening, I though it would be a good time to ask something that's been puzzling me for a while: What makes someone a 'user' on the forums as opposed to a guest? (No dr*ug related jokes, please!)
Ok, the obvious answer should be that a 'user' is someone who is registered and signed in, and a guest is someone who hasn't signed in and is just watching from the fringes. And yet, not so... because I've never seen myself listed as a user despite having been registered since May 16, and logged in every time I view the site, Likewise, some of you regular posters never show up as 'users' either, and yet our sp*mming friends almost always appear as users. (I check that page regularly as when I'm bored I like to play 'Whack-a-sp*m' and it's a good way of checking how many sp*m-posters are hanging around the site.)
Plus, just to get my interest heightened, for about 3 hours tonight, nobody was showing up as being on the site. It was showing 0 users and 0 guests. Well, obviously I was here, and some of you were here, and a few sp*mmers were definitely here, so it looks like we have yet another 'glitch'.
Obviously this question has no relevance to anything specifically author-related, so apologies if you think I'm wasting your time, but if anyone does know the answer, I'd love to hear it.
Many thanks in advance. J
I think it's the forum system trying to be clever and not list you, yourself, because you know that you're on. (I would not have coded it this way.)
Another attempt at cleverness is the "Mark all threads read" link The coders of the system tried to be clever and not show this option if all threads have been looked at, but there are bugs. Often, I look for this link and it's missing, despite the fact that anywhere from 2 to 15 threads may show a semi-red or full red circle to the left. I've gotten around this by creating fake bookmarks that invoke the "Mark all read" option for each forum. The simplest thing would have been to just leave that option there all the time--whether there are unread threads or not.
Another bug is this: If a thread has a post under moderation, you can't clear off the semi-red or red dot--the post has to come back before you can mark it read. If the post never comes back (a frequent occurrence these days), you just have to wait until the thread gets pushed off the first page of the thread list.
Of course, if these are the worst things we have to suffer on any given week, it's a good week.
Thanks for the quick response. I thought about that (not recognising me) so I tested it by being logged in on my laptop, and going in as a guest on my tablet, but I still didn't appear. And when I just checked, neither did you.
The bizarre thing is that my laptop is still showing as 0 people online whereas my tablet shows 1274 guests and 5 users. (Possibly I need to clear the cache - says she, almost sounding like she knows what she's talking about!)
Still as you say, if these things are our only worries, it's a good day.
Thanks again. J
Another glitch is when I log on to the Community page, a panel pops up saying this page is in French, do you want to translate it into English. Since I live in the UK it seems a kindly but strange offer. Maybe the ghost of William the Conqueror has returned to invade us again, and I'm the last to know. Sacre bleu!
Sacre bleu indeed! I get that as well, but only when I use my phone. Never on my b'berry tablet or the laptop, Maybe an android or possibly a G**gle chrome thing? It sees the French writing at the bottom with all the foreign language pages and feels the need to translate for you?

I know, and for the record, we're both there now! Woo-hoo!
I never asked it to translate because I was too worried it would mess up my page. Besides it would probably just have confused me and had me answering the wrong threads. I struggle to read the phone screen properly as it is!
Most members coming here are already signed in when they arrive, either coming in from Bookshelf, Reports or Author Central, or directly to the Community from a bookmark with a prior log in (24 hrs) still in effect. Others have to log in -- they're creating an account, they don't have a publishing account, or they previously logged out, perhaps to navigate the forum more swiftly. The ones who log in here are "Users;" the ones who arrive not logged in, along with those who never log in, are "Guests." Most Users are spa*mmers from India, Japan, U.S., U.K. or the densely populated country of Unknown.
Hello Ward, thanks for the explanation. I've considered that previously, but having signed off and back on from the forums to test it out, it didn't seem to work that way. Plus, I just appeared randomly at 4.03, the time of my second post, having been logged in throughout, and Joseph appeared a little while later. Previously I'd never seen myself in the lists before. I've reappeared and disappeared again since then as well.
As I said earlier, this is just a bit of Sunday evening nonsense, but I do appreciate people taking the time to respond. Best wishes. J
I knew I'd be asked that. The panel appears when I've just logged in and have already ignored it tonight. Now just after 1am UK time and I'm off to bed. Will try it tomorrow and let you know. Oh, the suspense! Can't wait myself...but so tired...
