eBook sales not recorded

Hi there,
I'm new to this so go easy on me here....

I would like to know if anyone has had this problem as, if this is not a one off incident, this is incredibly worrying:
I have an ebook and an audiobook that is linked to it. The Three Musketeers (a public domain title with illustrations)
According to KDP, my eBook has barely sold a copy (1 copy in fact at last count) however I noticed from looking at the audiobook royalties report that a large number of audiobook units had been sold at a vastly discounted rate $1.99 - when it retails at $28.99 or there about on different platforms. Customer services informed me that this could only be explained by a Whispersync promotion (someone who has purchased the ebook deciding to take up the audiobook for a reduced fee of (at the time) $1.99). In one month there were 28 audiobook units sold at this price, yet still only one reported eBook sale since it's publication. Months have passed and this has not 'worked itself' out as I have seen suggested on other forums. I succeeded in getting finance at ACX to confirm that these were sold on the 'hush puppy' (whisper sync) deal so there is no doubt.

Question: is there an independent body checking that reported sales match actual sales? If this is not an isolated incident then Amazon could be withholding millions of pounds erroneously - whether intentionally or through negligence. It is virtually impossible to prove sales of your eBook so, what can be done?

The alternative is that somehow my audiobook has been sold at a discounted rate to people who never even bough the eBook - which is more worrying. This is the book for what it's worth.

What do you get paid for users who download it as part of an audible membership? I don't know much about this but the FAQ seemed to suggest it would be around $2.

Yes, the ACX royalty is often around $2 or $3 by itself, unrelated to WhisperSync. This is particularly true for shorter length audios and especially so when the author has made a royalty share arrangement with the narrator/producer.

And speaking of audios, it's hard to figure how the OP is entitled to claim the audio rights to a public domain work when the only thing that sets his book apart, apparently, from other editions is the presence of original illustrations - which of course cannot be duplicated in an audio version.

Hi Emily,

Yes thank you - you're right, it is around $2.00 for when someone converts from eBook to Audiobook. My issue is that in one month 75 people paid this $2.00 to receive my audiobook yet at this point only 2 eBooks are showing as having been purchased. You can see why I am concerned as the one is not possible without the other.

Thanks jm,
But I am wearing all hats on this particular title - narrator/producer/publisher/illustrator etc and as this is an extremely long book the minimum royalty share should be 11.50 or thereabouts per unit (disregarding the whisper sync deal). So I am struggling to see how so many audiobook crossover sales there are, given that there are no sales (or near enough) attributed to the eBook. Apologies if this is the wrong place for this question but I am struggling to see where else to post it.
You're correct in that public domain titles require distinction. The eBook is unlike any other due to the illustrations, obviously the audiobook is unlike any other due the performance.

I assume your audio version is the only (or one of the only) audiobooks listed along with the ebooks of 3 Musketeers.

Many people buy the ebook, any ebook version of the book. Then they buy your audio version. Because all the different versions of a PD book are listed together, if any of them are bought, the buyer is then qualified to buy the audio version at $1.99. It looks like customers are buying other people's ebook versions of the book but your audio version. Sorry, but there's nothing you can do about it.

If someone does just buy the audio book outright, you'll get the higher royalty.

In addition to what Cdale said, you might want to check the actual selling price of the audio as a standalone on Amazon and Apple as well Audible. You might be surprised to find that it is much lower than you expect.

It's "audio*books". Apparently the plural is a for*bid*den word.

Yeah, audio*books are forbidden. How weird.

(But forbidden isn't forbidden!)

Bingo -- I bet this is the cause of the issue.

Possibly they just downloaded the audio not the e-book?

For some reason we were banned from the Net. It was probably for insipid comments made to people
we do not know, which was also to many innocents abroad. They were not amused. So we apologized.
Then said ban was lifted.

Our sales were recorded. We have no idea yet whether money was deposited into our account, which is corporate, since
we have an entire ad agency working for us, including layout people, illustrators, photographers, copywriters, etc. So as you
can see, our books are only a hobby. We made very little last year.

They did improve layout & "look" of that Reports page. It works out fine.
