Hi! have i made the worst mistakes? or just bad mistakes?

I recently finished a 70,000 word count book, one that i'm completely excited about, with a fully fleshed out universe and an ongoing story that's meant to span three books.. But i'm not sure how to go abut publishing it. it's been a chore trying to get a decent agent, and i decided to go on ahead to write something else while i try finding conventional representation instead of seeking ways to aggressively self publish. My first mistake? you tell me :)

So i finally write a short novelette titled 'Behold the seven miseries of the wandering mind', a completely different style from my original book, more metaphorical and a lot more abstract. it is simply 8 chapters of 60 pages of text, which i intended to be free, but i am finding it difficult to make free due to amazons price limit so i chose the cheapest price at 2.99. however i am planning on making it free with my KDP select membership when i decide to invest in a little marketing. However i want the book to be completely free, there are blogs that advise putting the book up as free on other merchant sites so Amazon will revise the price, but that voids the KDP select requirements... Thoughts on how i can do this? or i just run with the KDP select promotion? Is this my second mistake?

Then i upload the book on the 17th, and it goes live on Tuesday on all stores, however while i can view the book on amazon.com from my KDP bookshelf, the book does not turn up on amazon.com's search index, however it shows up on Amazon.co.uk. I have been checking each day for the past 6 days now, and it is still not showing up on Amazon.com's search while the exact same query brings up the book on amazon.co.uk. did i make a third mistake? do i contact Amazon? or i just need to be more patient? (Its been a week)

The novelette though short was a journey for me to write, and i feel the prose is immersive enough to elicit some form of subconscious involvement in the narrative itself. I am just a little sad that i could not make it free. If you read the first few pages and you are interested i can send you the full 60 pages personally if you contact me. I am still seeking representation for my full length book that is part one of a trilogy and i hope with time i can get that published too.

I wouldn't mind any help or advise at all. even if it doesn't answer any of the questions above. Plus, i would love any feedback from what you are able to see from the first few pages and the overall presentation of my books page here www.amazon.com/dp/B076HV47XK

I cant even check how the book looks on my kindle app because the search query comes up empty. sigh. sending people links is just not just efficient. oh well

Please, i need as much help or criticism as possible. cheers.

You make your book "permafree" by selling it free elsewhere and getting readers to report it. But that means not being in Select. More information can be found in the Writers cafe forum of kboards.com

Because you asked for it...

Bad editing.
Bad blurb.
No author page.
Charging that much for a 60 page book.
Expecting to make money from KU with 60 pages.
Not emailing Amazon and asking them to change the price.
Coming on here and asking other authors to pick it apart when you haven't picked it apart first.
Boring cover.

I'm sure there are other issues, but if you work on all of those, it will help you.

Thanks Angela!

I was worried about all those. Can i email amazon and ask them to change the price to 0.00$ without having to upload a free copy on a merchant site?

Sadly theres not much i can do about the cover art or the editing at this point, but now i know to take extra care with those for my full length Novel, if i ever decide to independently publish that.

I will also check out the blurb and see ways in which i can make it more engaging. While i understand books are majorly subjective, i know there are also empirical yardsticks for some aspects of a book, and i intend to strive to meet up to those as well as i can.

If you have any specific suggestions regarding the change of pricing and the blurb i will very much love to hear your thoughts.

I never intended for the book to be sold, just to be shared,

cheers.

Wow. You took that so well. Very nice!

Yes, just email them and ask for a price match. It's easier to go through Author Central and not your kdp account. They will ask you to send them links to other stores where it is free, so do that first if you haven't already.

Why can't you do anything about the cover or editing now? Even if you can't afford to hire someone to do it, you could still research and fix some of the errors yourself. Trust me, you don't want to leave it like that. Readers will tank you over it and those bad reviews NEVER go away.

There are tons of articles online about blurbs and pricing. Authors are all different and we value different things, so you'll have to read the articles and then go with the choice that makes you happy. Personally, I set prices by page length, not content or amount of effort. My readers like it, so I'm happy.

Good luck. You have a great attitude! That will help.

If you don't want to sell your book, there's no point in listing it on Amazon. None at all. Find those platforms (e.g., Smash*words) where "free" is an option and list it there. Or, for that matter, make it available on your own website. A word to the wise though -- people tend not to value anything that has no value; with books, it also means they may never be read.

If the goal is maximizing free distribution, I can see a point in listing on Amazon.
