Just published a children's book with Otters as the main animal in it. What I see page after page is GAY P...on the site. If I were a mom sitting with my child looking through to look for a book and come across this crap! Well you know what I mean. Powers that be should know better. I'd say more but I'm kind of HOT right now. What do you think as authors?

Perhaps it's the way you utilized the search string? I don't think erotica comes up on searches unless you set the terms too broad.

I could be wrong. But whenever I've searched for, say Vietnam War history books, or Bibles, nothing unusual appeared like that.

Hi Don

Something is weird with your browser since I get tons of children books when I enter the keywords you gave :)

Honestly, any adult should know that they shouldn't browse the internet with their child next to them because even the most innocent terms might pull up something.

I learned that lesson when I was a teenager. Try googling Winnie the pooh.

I searched for 'otter stories ebooks' and most of the books were actually books about otters. Toward the bottom was one gay erotica book.

Amazon does hide erotica. Especially this time of year. Trust me, the moms who buy erotica are just as unhappy as the authors who write them.

Hi Don

I am using google Chrome. Now, not being american or english I wasn't aware that "otter" has seemingly a second meaning related to hairy gay men.

this is on the same page as this https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/519Ud5-OvKL._AC_US218_.jpg

Maybe posting it like this won't work but I'm trying. There are dozens of these.

Hi Diana

Do you really think that E L James was so unhappy when she wrote her series and was still unhappy after the 20 millionth book was sold? :D

My first thought was to check the internet for urban slang for "otter," which I did. Voila, the answer.

Different search engines respond differently to different strings or word combinations. But there is always a logic- read, answer - of one kind or another involved, not just some random foul-up.

Don,

I confess, I thought this was a complete wind up! Otters and gay p*rn do not exactly go hand in hand, but when you said you used Edge, (which I use as well, mostly) I thought I'd give it a go, and typed in the words you used.

OMG!

On page one I got 'First Time Gay...', and 'Love Magik Glow' (an LGBT story). Page two found 'The Sleepover Incident: My First Gay Experience', and from page three they just multiplied!

I take back everything I thought about your previous search history! LOL

My adult filter is removed, because I write romantic fiction for over 18's, so while my books aren't in the erotica category, they are for grown-ups. Not sure if that makes the difference.

I guess you could use the contact us button to alert the Zon to the problem, but I don't know whether they'll do anything about it.

Wow! It's funny, almost! But at the same time, as you said, it's really not funny for the mom searching out books with her kids! Just, wow!

Okay. That brings me back to my first experience in the early days of using a computer. I wanted to look for a football schedule for the Oregon State Beavers, and put in "Beavers" wow did I get an eye full. I couldn't even close out the browser and had to unplug the computer. Can A.... do anything to fix something like this?

You misread my post. I said that Amazon hides the erotica. So moms who buy erotica are unhappy that it's being hidden.

ETA: I'm sure she's happy with the $. As for the moms who bought the books, that's another story. I know plenty of single women, mothers and grandmothers who bought the book. And not a single one of them liked it.

The power of marketing.

It's not really a problem - a glitch or malfunction - in that the search string is accurately returning the large number of popular titles with that word in them or in the page description or key words the author laid in during the publication process.

Also, this is not an issue affecting, probably, more than a handful of self-publishers from among the more than one million of such.

So I'd say it's almost certain that Amazon won't see anything that needs fixing.

(Also, I think you'd be hardpressed to find anyone who's used a computer for any length of time who hasn't been startled at one time or another by what Google or Edge or Firefox {or Amazon} turned up in reponse to what he or she thought was an innocent search for something)

I wish you every success with your work.
