Right now, my book is being sold exclusively through Amazon, and when I set it up for both digital and physical copy, it asked me if I wanted to use a ISBN code for it through Amazon. I said "Yes." In the eventuality that I choose to no longer exclusively sell my novel through Amazon.com, do I need to get another number to assign to the book? Or will I be able to keep the one I've been using.

You'll be assigned a new ISBN publishing elsewhere. It includes numbering to tell where it was published and who 'hosts' it for payment.

Since you've used a free KDP Print ISBN, KDP Print owns that ISBN. (That has no effect on your copyright.) You cannot use that ISBN with any other print service if you choose to have your book produced elsewhere in the future. You would need to obtain your own ISBN in that case. You can find your country's ISBN agency at https://www.isbn-international.org/agencies (it's Bowker in the US).

If you do get a new ISBN for the book in the future and use this new ISBN to distribute to Amazon, be aware that your book would then have two sales pages on Amazon: one for each ISBN. Amazon does not remove sales pages for print books, even if the book is no longer in print, so that users can sell second-hand copies.

What Sarah says! And note that this is a convincing argument for NOT using KDP Print Beta. Why would you not sell your paperback on Barnes & Noble, the largest physical bookstore chain in the world? So either go with CreateSpace and choose "expanded distribution," or be brave and set up an account with IngramSpark, which is the best choice in many respects. (You will have to buy your own ISBNs rather than use the "free" ones offered by KDP Print and CreateSpace. There is also a $49 setup fee, waived this month and again I think in April if you use a readily available coupon code.)

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

Until the end of November, the code INDIEFRINGE17 waives the setup fee. Until the end of March 2018, the code NANO17 waives the setup fee.

Thank you, Sarah! I will remember NANO17 for the spring term.

You say "until the end of March," but when does that begin, on March 1?
