I spend 7 -8 hrs a day online promoting my five titles. I have been a published author for over ten years.

I spend time on forums, twitter, facebook and myspace. I have weekly blogs and interviews posted about my work ... and yet, I haven't had one sale this month.

So if there are any successful selling authors out there that can give this veteran some advice, please do.

Thanks for reading.

Hi there,

What way to many people forget is they should always promote their book offline too. Print up some business cards with the name of your website, email, book title and give one to everyone you know.
Always, and I mean always use family, friends, co-workers as a great and free base of support. Get some printed copies of your book so you can always have a copy on you to give or sell to someone, each time you do give them two business cards, what will happen is they'll use one for a book mark and the other they'll give to someone.

So many times we forget the internet is awash in So much of Everything it can be extremely hard to break through all the 'noise' and be heard.

hope that helps some, greg

Hi Ladyhawke101,

Here is what I recommend to get more visibility for your books. Visibility = sales opportunity.

1. Find the most famous author who writes books like yours. Put that author's name, as it appears on Amazon, as one of your selected tags. Your books will be linked to that author.

2. Put that author's number 1 selling book as another of your tags. It will make your book show up on their book page. Casual browsers will see 'related products' and your book will be among them.

3. Make sure your books are properly displaying on the other amazon sites. Although, most of my sales come from US & UK.

4a. Put out a press release about your book with a link to your amazon page. Then, in the press release posting, you can select which categories your book shows in. The obvious selections would be 'books and magazines'. However, selecting a different target category such as 'Family' for a family related book will have better results. The first selection will display to publishers. The second will be picked up and displayed on numerous family related links. The same would go for 'military' for a military related book. It is a way to target the potential market where readers exist.

4b. Put a link in your press release to the Amazon Kindle on Amazon's page. All of their marketing and web promotions will pick up on that keyword.

The 4a & 4b will provide links for potential customers to get the Kindle and your book in a one-stop-shopping link.

5. List your book and author name on as many blogs and posting sites as you can find. Include the links above as well. The internet search engine bots will pick these up within a week and they will be results in search engines.

There are other ways to deploy a strategic marketing campaign. Hopefully these will help.

Good luck with your book sales.

Patrick

"Spend the time reading this book, it is well worth the short part of your life to put things in a good and positive perspective, at least that was the case for this subject chosen to write a Eulogy. When the character in this novel finds himself, perhaps deservedly, out of work, he learns how much he had departed from being the best he could be. Anyone can profit from this book and anyone can enjoy it. Perhaps those who all think the world owes them a living could somehow find the time and couple of bucks to learn from The Legacy Inheritance and turn their lives around. Thanks for a great read! Have now bought the second book from this author and looking forward to it. "

Not an idea for marketing, but one to see how successful your marketing efforts are. Go onto google and search "your author name" AND "author" and see what comes up. Make sure you use the inverted commas around your name and author, with the and function in the middle. The more, the better, of course. You can filter the function by time that mentions were posted so you can see the frequency of your mentions.

I ran this as a test at the end of last year as part of a blog series I was doing on self-publishing and marketing and I put in myself (10,000 hits) Stephen King (50 million hits) and an author from another forum who I've heard complaining that they don't sell any books (295 hits).

In the 2-3 months since then I've gone up to about 16,000 hits. Of course that doesn't guarantee sales, but the more visible you are, the more likely it is. I've checked many of the successful authors on here and the ones that sell the most almost always have the most mentions on the web. To prove the point, Nick Russell (who made it to the top 100 across the Amazon store) garners 94,000 hits.

Understanding your impact on the internet, and learning where your hits come from and how they're generated is your first and best way of improving your marketing. I do regular searches for myself and have set up a number of google alerts so I know instantly when I'm mentioned online, which tells me who is talking about me, and what they're saying. You never know, you might find someone praising your book in an obscure forum and you can always drop in and say hello and thanks. Trust me, goodwill is everything - get a reader onside and they'll tell everyone they know how wonderful you - and your books - are.

And for those who are interested, shameless plug to my blog series about self-publishing, from starting out to SEO

If, after ten years of the kind of effort you've been putting forth, this is where you are, that doesn't exactly make my day.

I think I'm having trouble adding tags. I submit tags, but when I click ont he "Your Tags" link to see if they have saved, I don't see anything but my book page.

Can someone tell me if I'm doing it right:

There's something about clicking Control and a letter (I think it's "t") to insert tags. Have you done this? If not, see if you can find the feature. I think it is below the tags slot.

I see no tags. go onto your book page and press T twice in quick succession and the tag box will open up and you can write them in. put a comma between each one

If your customer account isn't registered to Amazon.com your tags won't stick. You'll need to get someone in the States to set them for you.

I'm registered at .co.uk and I always have the same problem. I did try to set up a .com account too, but it wouldn't let me, kept shunting me away and telling me I was in the UK.

Hi Greg. Thanks you for taking the time to answer.

Even though I'm from the midlands UK, I unfortunately live in a small village on a Greek Island. Although that hasn't stopped me promoting my books.

I've used Vistaprint and have calenders, magnets, business cards, t-shirts, pens, cap and even bags, with my books, website and name advertised.

And a few years ago I used to make my own bookmarks.

Hi Patrick.

I've already tagged my books to similar best sellers, but I haven't thought about using the authors name, so thank you for that great tip.

Done the press release, but only free ones as I can't afford to pay for any promotion. The idea to use a different category is great. And to add the Amazon Kindle link, thank you.

Okay Lady Hawk...I've got an idea as well.

This one comes from the old method of finding your allergies.

Right now you spend 7-8hours online. (Jeesh so do I. I need to take this advice.)

Quit marketing cold turkey for one week and see what that does to your sales. After one week add back one marketing technique and watch what happens for three days or so. (If it is good marketing it should give you at least a couple of sales.)

If it doesn't work, quit that one and try another.

After about a month you will see what efforts have some effect and what efforts have no effect.

After your month or so of testing is done make a real effort to only do the marketing that sells your books and to spend FAR less time at it.

Ten minutes a morning--one hour a week--should be totally sufficient.

Good luck!
